Why MindView
Most therapy in Troy has no structure. Ours has four stages and a scoreboard.
Most practices in Troy deliver whatever approach the therapist you happened to get was trained in. We run one format for every client, and we measure it.
- 01
Intake
What is actually going on, rated 0 to 10 as your baseline.
- 02
Your history
Why it is happening. History, relationships, work, health.
- 03
Treatment plan
Written and collaborative, built against those causes.
- 04
Monthly review
Standardized measures, reviewed with you. You see the trend.
A license is where our training starts, not where it ends.
Every clinician is state-licensed before they see a single client. Then they train with us across every modality, and how to match one to the problem in front of them.

Therapy in Troy, in short
MindView Therapy sees Troy clients by secure video anywhere in New York State. We are a CBT-focused practice for adults 18 and older, in-network with UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Medicare, Oscar Health, Meritain Health, Oxford Health Plans, Cigna, Optum, Highmark BCBS WNY, Univera Healthcare and MagnaCare. We do not have a Troy office, and we are accepting new clients now.
Troy runs on an academic calendar. Semesters end, leases turn over, and the people who most need a steady weekly appointment are the ones whose address changes twice a year. Video sessions travel with you inside New York State, and booking takes about 30 seconds.
Who do you help in Troy?
MindView Therapy works with adults 18 and older across Rensselaer County: downtown Troy, Lansingburgh, South Troy and Sycaway, plus Watervliet, Green Island, Wynantskill, North Greenbush, East Greenbush and Brunswick.
Anxiety and depression are the two most common reasons people book. Others come in for trauma, OCD, burnout, grief or a relationship that has been stuck in the same argument for a year. No diagnosis required to start, and no need to have the problem neatly worded before the first call.
We also see couples.
Therapy on an academic calendar
Troy is a small city with a large student population attached to it. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute alone enrolls 7,040 students (National Center for Education Statistics, IPEDS, fall 2024), and the city’s median age is 32.3 years (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020-2024 five-year estimates). That shapes how therapy has to be scheduled here more than it does in most places.
The pattern is familiar: work starts in October, goes well, and then December arrives and the client disappears until February. Nothing went wrong clinically. The semester ended. Two months of momentum gets rebuilt from a standing start, and some people never come back at all.
Video changes what a break costs. As long as you are physically in New York State during the session, the appointment holds through finals week, through a move across town, and through a summer spent at a parent’s house in Westchester. What it cannot cross is the state line. Your therapist is licensed in New York, so a semester in Boston or a co-op in New Jersey means sessions pause rather than continue quietly and improperly.
The practical version: tell your therapist your term dates at intake. A plan built around a known break survives it.
Does therapy by video actually hold up?
For the outpatient concerns we treat, research comparing video-delivered CBT with in-person CBT has generally found comparable outcomes. That is the honest framing, and it is the limit of what the evidence supports.
Our own part is easier to check. Once a month you complete standardized measures and read the trend with your therapist. Flat numbers after a fair trial are treated as information about the plan, not about you, and the plan is what changes.
Some situations need more structure than weekly video sessions can carry. If yours is one, we will say so at intake instead of six weeks in.
What the work is built on
The method is cognitive behavioral therapy: structured, focused on the present, organized around skills you practice between appointments rather than insight you arrive at during them.
You get a written treatment plan with goals in your own words, and the appointments run weekly. For a student that cadence is the point, because skills learned once and never rehearsed do not survive a stressful week.

What does therapy here actually look like?
The first three sessions follow a clear structure, so you always know what is coming next.
- The first meeting
Your first session is an intake. Your therapist asks what brought you in and about your history, and you rate the intensity of what you are feeling from 0 to 10. That becomes your baseline. You set a recurring weekly time before you leave.
- The wider picture
Your therapist walks through your life across stages, looking for the patterns and strengths behind what brought you in. You can decline any question and keep any answer short.
- Building the plan
You and your therapist build the plan together. Goals are tied to what you came in for, each with concrete objectives, plus one personal goal that matters to you.
- Ongoing
Weekly sessions work the plan. Once a month you and your therapist review standardized measures together to see whether it is working, and the plan is adjusted from what they show.
Therapy here is measured, not guessed
Once a month you have a measurement-based care review. You complete standardized measures, and your therapist reviews the trend with you. If something is not working, the plan changes. Regular therapy is the work. The review is the navigation system that keeps it pointed at the right target.
Sessions are weekly for the first two months to build a foundation, then frequency is reassessed with you. You set the pace, and you share only what you are comfortable sharing.

Troy questions
Does MindView Therapy have an office in Troy?
No, and there is no in-person option to ask about. Every MindView session is online by secure video, for Troy clients and for everyone else we see in New York State.
What insurance do you take in Troy?
UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Medicare, Oscar Health, Meritain Health, Oxford Health Plans, Cigna, Optum, Highmark BCBS WNY, Univera Healthcare and MagnaCare for New York telehealth. We verify your specific benefits and tell you what you will owe before your first session.
Do you work with college students?
Yes, if you are 18 or older. The thing to plan around is not the dorm room, it is the state line. Your therapist holds a New York license, so winter break in Albany or Buffalo is fine and a semester abroad or a summer in Vermont is not. Say when your term ends and the work gets planned around it.
Can my therapist be licensed in another state?
No. What governs is where you are sitting, not where the practice is. Our clinicians hold New York licenses, which is what covers you in Troy.
How soon can I be seen?
We are accepting new clients and respond within one business day. Booking online takes about 30 seconds.
What happens in the first session?
Intake. What brought you in, enough history for context, and what you want to be different. You put a 0 to 10 number on how strong it feels right now, and that number is what later sessions get compared against.
Do you offer couples counseling in Troy?
Yes. Both partners join the same video call, and they do not have to join from the same room. Two separate locations works, provided both of you are inside New York at the time.
