How being seen in New York works

New York licenses therapists for the whole state, not for one city. A therapist with a New York license can see anyone who is in New York, which is why we can service New York State through secure video.

The rule that catches people out is which end of the call it follows. What matters is where you are sitting during the session, not where you live and not where your insurance card was issued. Someone who lives on Long Island but works in New Jersey has to take the session from the New York side. A Buffalo student home in Rochester for the summer is still covered. If you are travelling out of state on a session day, tell your therapist and move it.

New York also has one of the stronger telehealth laws in the country. Insurers regulated by the state have to cover a video session on the same basis as the same service in an office, which for most plans means the same copay. A video session here is a real clinical service billed to your benefits.

Wherever you are in the state, you get the same New York-licensed therapists, the same treatment plan and the same monthly progress reviews. Everything on this page is for adults 18 and over.

What starting therapy in New York looks like

The same four-stage structure runs everywhere in the state. It exists so you always know where you are in the process and what the next session is for.

  1. 1

    Starting out

Your first session maps the problem. Your therapist asks what brought you in and what you want to be different, and you rate how intense it feels from 0 to 10. That number is the baseline every later review is measured against. You leave with a recurring weekly time on the calendar.

  2. 2

    Filling in the picture

Your full history across its stages, including relationships, work, health and identity, and the patterns and strengths running through them. You can decline any question and keep any answer as short as you want.

  3. 3

    Setting the plan

You and your therapist write the plan together. Each goal ties back to what you came in for and carries concrete objectives, plus one personal goal that matters to you and has nothing to do with a diagnosis.

  4. 4

Ongoing: weekly sessions and a monthly review

Weekly sessions work the plan. Once a month you sit down for a measurement-based care review, using standardized measures, and look at the trend together. The plan changes based on what the measures show, not only on how a session felt.

Sessions run weekly for the first two months to build a foundation, then frequency is reassessed with you. Care ends when the goals are met, with a tapering and relapse-prevention plan, and you can come back at any point. More on how we work.

How to start

  1. 1.Confirm you will be physically in New York for your sessions. That is the licensing requirement, and it is the only geographic condition.
  2. 2.Pick a therapist from the roster and request a time on their page. Nothing inside the next 24 hours is bookable, so the earliest slots start tomorrow.
  3. 3.We verify your benefits and tell you your cost before the first session, not after it.
  4. 4.Attend the intake from anywhere private in the state. Bring your insurance card and a rough sense of what you want to change.

New York therapy questions

Do I have to live in New York City to be seen?

No. Our clinicians are licensed by New York State, and a New York license covers the whole state. We service New York State through secure video, so if you are physically located anywhere in New York at the time of your session, you can be seen.

Where do I need to be during a session?

Somewhere in New York State, and somewhere private. New York requires that a therapist be licensed in the state where the client is physically located during the session, so what matters is where you are that hour, not where you live or where your insurance was issued. If you are travelling out of state on a session day, tell us and we will move the appointment.

Which insurance plans do you take in New York?

We are in-network with UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Medicare, Oscar Health, Meritain Health, Oxford Health Plans, Cigna, Optum, Highmark BCBS WNY, Univera Healthcare, MagnaCare. We confirm your specific plan before your first session.

Is a video session with a New York therapist covered the same as an office visit?

In most cases yes. New York State law requires insurers to cover telehealth on the same basis as an in-person service, and most plans apply the same copay. Your exact cost depends on your plan, so we check your benefits and tell you the number before you start rather than after.

Do I need to live near a MindView office?

No. We service New York State through secure video, so wherever you are in New York you get the same therapists, the same treatment plan and the same monthly progress reviews, billed to the same in-network plans.

How soon can I start?

Pick a therapist and request a time from their page. Nothing inside the next 24 hours is bookable, so the earliest appointments start the following day. If you would rather talk to a person first, call (646) 493-4007.

Do you see children or teenagers in New York?

No. MindView Therapy works with adults 18 and over. If you are looking for care for someone younger, your pediatrician or your plan's behavioral health line can point you to a practice that specialises in it.
