Why MindView
Most therapy in Long Beach has no structure. Ours has four stages and a scoreboard.
Plenty of practices take Optum. What you get here is one format for every client: a full intake, a written treatment plan, and standardized measures reviewed with you every month, so you can see whether it is working.
- 01
Intake
What is actually going on, rated 0 to 10 as your baseline.
- 02
Your history
Why it is happening. History, relationships, work, health.
- 03
Treatment plan
Written and collaborative, built against those causes.
- 04
Monthly review
Standardized measures, reviewed with you. You see the trend.
A license is where our training starts, not where it ends.
Every clinician is state-licensed before they see a single client. Then they train with us across every modality, and how to match one to the problem in front of them.

Optum in Long Beach, in short
MindView Therapy is in network with Optum and sees Long Beach adults by secure video across New York State. Optum is the behavioral health side of a UnitedHealthcare or UMR card rather than a plan anyone buys, so your medical card may say another name. Some employers add an Optum employee assistance program with a set number of no-cost sessions, authorised before the first appointment. We work out which route applies and give you the number before booking.
Schools, hospitals and social service organisations employ more Long Beach residents than anything else: 7,407 of 20,045, or 37 percent, against 31.7 percent in Nassau County and 29.3 percent statewide. Those are also the employers most likely to run an employee assistance program, and an assistance program has an order of operations. Get the order wrong and a session that should have cost nothing bills like an ordinary one.
Do these in order and it costs you less
An Optum benefit is not complicated, but it does have a sequence, and getting the sequence wrong is the single most common reason a session that should have been free ends up on a regular bill. The steps below matter more than an explanation of what Optum is, because the steps are what actually determine your cost.
We are in network with Optum and see Long Beach adults by secure video across New York State. Whether your specific route runs through an ordinary plan benefit or an employee assistance program, following the steps in order is what keeps the cost you were told about the cost you actually pay.
Step one: read what the card actually says
Start with the card itself. Look for a behavioral health or mental health phone number that is separate from the general member services line, and check whether an employee assistance program is mentioned anywhere on the card or in your benefits materials. Both point toward the same underlying Optum network, accessed two different ways.
Nobody buys an Optum plan directly. Optum is the behavioral health side of a UnitedHealthcare or UMR card, which is why your medical card can say one name while your therapy benefit says another, and the card itself is where that distinction first becomes visible if you know what to look for.
UMR is the other name that shows up on some cards in this same pattern, a separate administrator that also sits on the Optum behavioral health network. If your card carries either UnitedHealthcare or UMR on the medical side, the practical answer stays the same regardless of which one is printed: we check what applies to you and confirm it before booking.
Step two: find out whether an assistance program exists
An employee assistance program offers a set number of sessions at no cost, commonly a handful per issue per year, with no deductible and no copay attached while the benefit lasts. Not every UnitedHealthcare or UMR plan includes one, and whether yours does is not always obvious from the card alone.
We ask about this directly as part of booking rather than assuming either way. If your plan does include an assistance benefit, the next step is the one that actually determines whether you get to use it at no cost.
Not having an assistance program is not a problem either. Plenty of UnitedHealthcare and UMR members reach Optum purely through their ordinary plan’s behavioral health benefit, with no free-session tier attached at all. In that case the steps simplify: we verify your regular copay, coinsurance or deductible structure and give you that number directly, without a code or an assistance line involved.
Step three: the authorisation code, before the first session
The authorization code has to exist before your first session, not after. It generally comes from calling the number on your plan’s employee assistance line and confirming eligibility for the benefit. Without that code in place beforehand, the visit is billed as an ordinary session against your regular cost sharing rather than treated as a free assistance visit.
The number of sessions and what counts as a new issue both vary by employer, so we do not assume a fixed count applies to you. What stays consistent regardless of your specific plan is the order of operations: the code comes first, then the session, every time. Getting that order backward is the single most common way a free benefit ends up billed as a regular visit instead.
Schools, hospitals and who this applies to in Long Beach
Education, health care and social assistance employ 7,407 of the 20,045 employed people living in Long Beach, 37 percent, well above both Nassau County’s 31.7 percent and New York State’s 29.3 percent in the same category. That is the largest single employment category in this city by a wide margin.
Organizations of that kind, schools, hospitals and social service agencies, are commonly the employers most likely to run an employee assistance program alongside their regular plan. That is the honest reason an Optum question comes up so often in Long Beach specifically. None of that employment figure says which school district, hospital or agency actually offers an assistance program, and we are not going to claim it does for any specific employer.
A 37 percent share also does not distinguish between a large hospital system and a small home health agency, or between a school district’s full-time staff and its part-time aides. Those organizations vary widely in size and in whether they offer an assistance benefit at all, which is one more reason the sector total cannot answer a question that only your specific employer’s plan can.
A job in a Long Beach school, hospital, or social service agency usually means the caregiving does not end on the clock. A nurse coming off a night shift explains a diagnosis to a family before finally getting to sleep herself, a teacher spends the drive home replaying a call to a parent that did not go well, a caseworker carries a client’s file home in her head even after logging off for the day. People in work built around caring for other people often arrive at a first session already fluent in naming what is wrong with someone else and considerably less practiced at describing what is wrong for themselves.
Working in education, health care or social services is not itself a reason to start therapy, and plenty of people in those fields carry the job well without it ever becoming the reason they call. The employment figure only says how common that kind of caregiving work is here. It does not say who among those workers is carrying more than they can manage, and it is not something this figure can answer for anyone.
When the free sessions run out
Once assistance sessions are used up, your regular plan cost sharing takes over: a copay, a coinsurance percentage of the allowed amount, or the remainder of a deductible you have not yet met. It is never the full session fee, and never a balance billed for the difference between our rate and what your plan pays.
Because that cost sharing is set by your employer’s plan design, no single dollar figure would be accurate for every member. We check your specific plan and tell you the number that applies once the free sessions end, so the transition never arrives as a surprise partway through a course of care that started at no cost to you.
A deductible on the regular benefit resets once a year, on whatever date your employer’s plan year begins, which is not always January 1. If you have already met it through other medical costs by the time the assistance sessions run out, coinsurance alone may apply from that point forward, without an additional deductible cost stacked on top. We confirm where you stand on that deductible as part of the same check.
Booking once the route is clear
Adults 18 and older across Long Beach reach Optum through a UnitedHealthcare or UMR card, often through education or health care employment given how large that sector is here, or through any other employer whose plan routes behavioral health this way. People come in for burnout, caregiver burnout, anxiety, depression, and building practical coping skills, along with general therapy for anyone whose reason does not fit neatly into one category.
MindView has no office in Long Beach, and every session is by secure video with a clinician licensed in New York. See the Long Beach location page for the full list of plans covered here, part of our statewide New York coverage. You do not need a manager’s sign-off to use an assistance benefit your employer already offers, and a rough sense that work has gotten harder to carry is a reasonable enough reason to start.
Have your Optum, UnitedHealthcare, or UMR card ready, and note whether an employee assistance program applies to you. If it does, call the number on the card first for an authorization code. Book online; it takes about 30 seconds, and we verify the rest.
A first session is an intake rather than treatment: what brought you in, the background that matters to it, what you want different, and a baseline reading using standardized measures that later sessions get checked against. From there, you set a recurring weekly time, with the cost already settled ahead of time rather than discovered on a bill after the fact.
What Optum covers here
- •Optum is the behavioral health network behind UnitedHealthcare and UMR coverage. Your medical card and your therapy line can carry different names for the same membership.
- •Employee assistance sessions are typically a set number at no cost, with no deductible and no copay attached to them while they last.
- •An authorization code from your plan's assistance line usually has to exist before your first session, or the visit bills as an ordinary one instead.
- •Once assistance sessions run out, your regular plan cost sharing takes over, a copay, coinsurance, or the remainder of a deductible, never the full session fee.
- •Cost sharing beyond the assistance benefit is employer-set, so it cannot be quoted as one figure. We verify your specific plan before booking.

What does therapy here actually look like?
The first three sessions follow a clear structure, so you always know what is coming next.
- Getting started
Your first session is an intake. Your therapist asks what brought you in and about your history, and you rate the intensity of what you are feeling from 0 to 10. That becomes your baseline. You set a recurring weekly time before you leave.
- Mapping what is behind it
Your therapist walks through your life across stages, looking for the patterns and strengths behind what brought you in. You can decline any question and keep any answer short.
- Writing the plan together
You and your therapist build the plan together. Goals are tied to what you came in for, each with concrete objectives, plus one personal goal that matters to you.
- Ongoing
Weekly sessions work the plan. Once a month you and your therapist review standardized measures together to see whether it is working, and the plan is adjusted from what they show.
Therapy here is measured, not guessed
Once a month you have a measurement-based care review. You complete standardized measures, and your therapist reviews the trend with you. If something is not working, the plan changes. Regular therapy is the work. The review is the navigation system that keeps it pointed at the right target.
Sessions are weekly for the first two months to build a foundation, then frequency is reassessed with you. You set the pace, and you share only what you are comfortable sharing.

Optum questions
My employer says I get a few free counseling sessions. What do I do first?
Call your plan's employee assistance line and get the authorisation code before the first appointment, then book. Without the code first, the session bills as an ordinary one against your regular cost sharing instead of the free assistance visit it was meant to be. We ask about this at the start of booking specifically because it is the single most useful and most commonly missed step in the whole process.
My card says UnitedHealthcare or UMR. Is that still Optum?
Yes. The behavioral health side of a UnitedHealthcare or UMR card runs through Optum, which is why both names come up in different places on the same membership. We verify your benefit under whichever name is printed on your card, so there is nothing extra for you to sort out or translate before your first session.
I work in a school or a hospital. Is an assistance program likely?
Common in those settings, but we are not going to claim it for any specific employer. Education, health care and social assistance make up 37 percent of employed Long Beach residents, and organizations of that kind often run an assistance program alongside their regular plan. Whether yours does, and what its specific terms are, is something we help you check rather than assume.
What happens when the free sessions are used up?
Ordinary plan cost sharing takes over, a copay, a coinsurance percentage, or the remainder of a deductible you have not yet met, but never the full session fee. Because that cost sharing is set by your employer's plan design, we check your specific plan and tell you the number that applies once the free sessions end, well before the transition actually happens.
Is there a MindView office in Long Beach?
No. Every Long Beach session is by secure video with a clinician licensed in New York, from anywhere in the state. MindView's offices exist as offices, never as a place a client is seen in person, and none of them is in Long Beach.
