Why MindView
Most therapy in Lockport has no structure. Ours has four stages and a scoreboard.
Plenty of practices take Optum. What you get here is one format for every client: a full intake, a written treatment plan, and standardized measures reviewed with you every month, so you can see whether it is working.
- 01
Intake
What is actually going on, rated 0 to 10 as your baseline.
- 02
Your history
Why it is happening. History, relationships, work, health.
- 03
Treatment plan
Written and collaborative, built against those causes.
- 04
Monthly review
Standardized measures, reviewed with you. You see the trend.
A license is where our training starts, not where it ends.
Every clinician is state-licensed before they see a single client. Then they train with us across every modality, and how to match one to the problem in front of them.

Optum in Lockport, in short
MindView Therapy is in-network with Optum and sees Lockport adults by secure video anywhere in New York State. Nobody buys Optum insurance. Optum is the behavioral health network behind UnitedHealthcare and UMR, so it usually shows up as the therapy phone number on the back of a card with a different name on the front. We confirm which route applies to you before booking.
About 10,730 jobs in Niagara County sit on a local government payroll, and public employers are where an employee assistance program is most likely to be part of the package and least likely to get used. If yours has one, it is often a set number of therapy sessions at no cost to you. The catch is procedural rather than clinical, and it is worth knowing before you book rather than after.
The answer for Lockport members
MindView Therapy is in-network with Optum, and Lockport adults are seen by secure video with a New York licensed clinician. That is true anywhere in the state, with no Lockport office and no in-person alternative offered at any MindView location.
Before booking, check the back of your card for a behavioral health number or an employee assistance line. Either one points to Optum, and either one is the starting point for confirming your specific benefit.
The question worth answering before you book is not whether Optum is accepted. It is whether an employee assistance benefit is sitting unused behind your card, and that is genuinely worth five minutes to check.
Optum is a phone line, not a plan
Nobody signs up for Optum the way they sign up for an insurance plan. Optum is the behavioral health network sitting behind UnitedHealthcare and UMR, so members usually meet it as the number printed on the back of a card with a different name on the front, or as an employee assistance program a benefits packet mentioned once during onboarding.
That indirect route is exactly why the most common question we get is not about coverage. It is about which name actually applies to a given member, and the answer is almost always both: the front-of-card plan and the Optum network behind it.
A member searching for an Optum therapist rarely started there. They usually started with a name printed on the front of their card, hit a phone number for behavioral health on the back, and are now trying to work out whether the two connect. They do.
The pharmacy line on some cards adds a third name to the mix, which is a separate benefit entirely and has nothing to do with booking therapy. What matters for booking a therapy session is the behavioral health line specifically, wherever it points.
Public payrolls across Niagara County
Local government employment is a large share of Niagara County’s job base: 10,730 jobs across 93 establishments, an average annual pay of $66,197, and about 15.6 percent of all covered employment in the county. A meaningful share of the county’s ten largest employers are public bodies, county government and school districts among them.
Public sector benefit packages are where an employee assistance program shows up most reliably, and where it goes most unused. A packet mentioned once at hiring is easy to forget by the time somebody actually needs it.
That gap between offered and used is worth closing before you book. A benefit that nobody remembers signing up for is functionally invisible until somebody asks the right question, and asking is free.
The same pattern shows up beyond government payrolls too. Larger private employers in health care, manufacturing, and retail often build an EAP into their benefits package the same way, so the check is worth making regardless of which sector your Niagara County job sits in.
Public-sector jobs like the 10,730 in Niagara County’s local government tend to come with unusually stable benefits and unusually visible schedules at the same time. A supervisor who signs off on time off work, a shared calendar the whole department can see, and colleagues who notice a desk empty at the same time every week, all of that makes a benefit easy to use on paper and hard to use quietly in practice. Finding an hour without a colleague noticing is what actually decides whether a weekly session booked through an EAP gets kept.
Working in the public sector does not mean privacy is the only obstacle, and a stable paycheck is not itself a reason to start therapy. It means that once the EAP question is answered, the harder one left for a lot of Niagara County public employees is finding an hour nobody else is tracking.
EAP sessions, and the code that comes first
If your employer has one, an EAP benefit is commonly a set number of therapy sessions at no cost, no deductible, no copay, and commonly a small fixed number per issue per year. We say commonly rather than promise it, because the number and the existence of the benefit both vary by employer, and we confirm rather than assume.
The part that actually matters procedurally is the authorization code. It has to be obtained before the first session. Without it, the visit does not bill as an EAP session at all, it bills as a regular one at the plan’s normal cost share. That single step is the difference between a free session and a billed one.
We handle that step as part of booking rather than leaving it to you to track down. It is a short call or a quick check against your employer’s plan, and it happens before your first session gets scheduled, not after.
The exact number of sessions and the definition of what counts as one issue both vary from employer to employer, which is why we confirm rather than quote a figure that might be wrong for your specific benefit. Some plans reset the count annually, and others tie it to a rolling twelve months.
The code itself is usually obtained with a short phone call to the number on the back of your card, and we can walk that step with you rather than leave you to figure out who to call first.
After the free sessions run out
When the EAP sessions are used up, care does not stop. The underlying plan’s regular cost share takes over, which might be a flat copay charged per visit, or a deductible you clear first with coinsurance after it. We define both plainly and recheck the number at that transition so nothing changes without you knowing first.
Those three terms are worth keeping straight. A copay is a fixed number that never changes with the visit. Coinsurance is a percentage of the visit cost. A deductible is a yearly running total that has to clear before either one starts applying at its normal rate, and it resets every January.
If your EAP sessions run out partway through the year with the underlying deductible still unmet, the first post-EAP session can cost more than later ones will. We check where that deductible actually stands, using the member portal or the benefits summary from your employer, so the transition number is known in advance rather than showing up on a bill.
That transition is worth planning for rather than being surprised by. Knowing in advance that the free sessions have a limit, and what comes after them, is part of what we walk through at intake rather than partway through a course of care.
There is no requirement that care stop or restart at that transition point. It is a change in what a session costs, not a change in the clinician you are working with or the weekly time already set.
How a Lockport booking starts
Book through the booking page with your card in hand, and note the behavioral health number on the back if you have not already checked it. We confirm whether an EAP benefit applies, get the authorization code sorted if it does, and tell you the per-session cost either way before anything is scheduled.
A first session is an intake, not treatment: what brought you in, the history that matters to it, and what you want different, with a baseline taken using standardized measures.
People book here for anxiety, burnout, boundary issues at work, and communication struggles that spill from the job into everything else. General therapy covers whatever does not fit a narrower label. The Lockport therapy page covers what MindView offers locally, and therapy in New York covers coverage and licensure statewide.
What Optum covers here
- •Optum is the behavioral health network behind UnitedHealthcare and UMR, not something anyone enrolls in on its own.
- •Members meet Optum through the therapy line on the back of a card, an employer's employee assistance program, or a pharmacy line, depending on the plan.
- •Employee assistance program sessions are commonly at no cost, with no deductible or copay, and are often a set number per issue per year. We say commonly, never as a promise, and confirm your plan's actual number.
- •An authorization code has to be obtained before the first session for an EAP visit to bill correctly. Without it, the visit bills as a regular session at regular cost share.
- •Once EAP sessions run out, the regular cost share on the underlying plan takes over, whether that is a copay or a deductible followed by coinsurance.
How to book with Optum
- 1
Have your card ready and check the phone number on the back for behavioral health or an employee assistance program.
- 2
Book online. It takes about 30 seconds.
- 3
We confirm whether an EAP benefit or authorization code applies and tell you the per-session cost before anything is scheduled.
- 4
Your first session is an intake, by secure video from anywhere in New York State.
What does therapy here actually look like?
The first three sessions follow a clear structure, so you always know what is coming next.
- Getting started
Your first session is an intake. Your therapist asks what brought you in and about your history, and you rate the intensity of what you are feeling from 0 to 10. That becomes your baseline. You set a recurring weekly time before you leave.
- Mapping what is behind it
Your therapist walks through your life across stages, looking for the patterns and strengths behind what brought you in. You can decline any question and keep any answer short.
- Writing the plan together
You and your therapist build the plan together. Goals are tied to what you came in for, each with concrete objectives, plus one personal goal that matters to you.
- Ongoing
Weekly sessions work the plan. Once a month you and your therapist review standardized measures together to see whether it is working, and the plan is adjusted from what they show.
Therapy here is measured, not guessed
Once a month you have a measurement-based care review. You complete standardized measures, and your therapist reviews the trend with you. If something is not working, the plan changes. Regular therapy is the work. The review is the navigation system that keeps it pointed at the right target.
Sessions are weekly for the first two months to build a foundation, then frequency is reassessed with you. You set the pace, and you share only what you are comfortable sharing.

Optum questions
My card says UnitedHealthcare but my therapist takes Optum. Which is it?
Both. The card is UnitedHealthcare, and the behavioral health line on the back connects to Optum, the network that handles therapy for that plan. Same member, same benefits, and we are in-network either way. Bring the card as printed, and we confirm the specific benefit before your first session.
I work for a public employer in Niagara County. Do I have free sessions?
Possibly. Employee assistance programs are common in public benefit packages, and they are commonly at no cost with no deductible. The number of sessions varies by employer, and we help confirm whether your specific job has one rather than assuming it does. We never promise a benefit exists before checking.
What is the authorization code and why do I need it first?
It is the reference that tells the plan a session is an employee assistance session rather than a regular one. It has to exist before the first appointment. Without it, the visit bills at the plan's regular cost share instead of at no cost, so getting it first genuinely changes what you pay.
What happens after my EAP sessions run out?
Care continues, and the underlying plan's regular cost share takes over. That might be a flat copay per visit, or a deductible you clear before coinsurance starts. We recheck the number at that transition point so it never arrives as a surprise partway through a course of care.
Can I use these sessions from home in Lockport?
Yes. Every session runs by secure video with a New York licensed clinician, anywhere in the state. There is no Lockport office, and the same EAP and authorization process applies whether you are booking from Lockport, Buffalo, or anywhere else in New York.
