Why MindView
Most therapy in Norwich has no structure. Ours has four stages and a scoreboard.
Plenty of practices take Optum. What you get here is one format for every client: a full intake, a written treatment plan, and standardized measures reviewed with you every month, so you can see whether it is working.
- 01
Intake
What is actually going on, rated 0 to 10 as your baseline.
- 02
Your history
Why it is happening. History, relationships, work, health.
- 03
Treatment plan
Written and collaborative, built against those causes.
- 04
Monthly review
Standardized measures, reviewed with you. You see the trend.
A license is where our training starts, not where it ends.
Every clinician is state-licensed before they see a single client. Then they train with us across every modality, and how to match one to the problem in front of them.

Optum in Norwich, in short
MindView Therapy is in-network with Optum and sees Norwich adults by secure video across New York State. Optum is the behavioral health side of a UnitedHealthcare or UMR card, so many members find their medical card says one name while their therapy line says another. Some employers also add an Optum employee assistance program with a set number of no-cost sessions. We check which route applies to you before booking.
Chenango County has 3,028 local government jobs across 77 worksites, 17.1 percent of every job in the county, and 1,750 of those sit in local public education. Public employers are among the most likely to attach an employee assistance programme to a benefits package. That programme is where most people meet the name Optum, and it is also where a lot of people stop looking.
The card says one name, the therapy line says another
Yes, MindView is in-network with Optum, and Norwich adults are seen by secure video anywhere in New York State. Optum is not a plan anyone shops for. It is the behavioral health side of coverage that shows up on the front of the card as UnitedHealthcare or UMR, which is why the name on your therapy benefit and the name on your medical card can look like two different companies serving one membership.
That split trips people up more than the coverage itself does. A member calls expecting to explain that they “have Optum,” and finds their card does not say that anywhere. It does not need to. What matters for booking is what your specific card and plan actually route to, and we check that before your first session rather than asking you to sort it out over the phone in advance.
There is a second layer worth naming early: some Optum-administered plans carry two distinct benefits stacked on top of each other, an employee assistance programme and the regular health plan. They are not the same thing, they are not billed the same way, and confusing them is the single most common way people end up paying for a session they expected to be free, or stopping care they thought had run out when it had not.
One job in six here is a local government job
Chenango County counted 17,735 jobs across all industries and ownerships in the 2025 annual averages, and 3,028 of them, roughly one in six, sat in local government spread across 77 separate worksites. Of that local government total, 1,750 jobs were in local public education alone, across 36 worksites, at an average annual pay of $59,596.
Public employers of this kind are, as a category, among the likelier ones to attach an employee assistance programme to their health benefits. That is a structural pattern about how public-sector benefits packages are typically built, not a claim about any specific Chenango County office, school, or agency, and we are not naming one. It is also the honest reason a page explaining Optum’s two-benefit structure belongs to this county: the local job base includes a meaningful share of the kind of employer that tends to offer exactly this setup.
None of this figure says who at a given worksite actually carries an Optum-routed plan, or whether that particular employer added an assistance programme at all. What it establishes is scale: a large enough slice of local jobs sits in the sector where this two-benefit structure is common that the confusion between the two benefits is worth explaining plainly, rather than assuming it is generally understood.
Assistance sessions and the authorization code
An employee assistance programme, where an employer has added one, typically offers a set number of sessions at no cost, commonly a handful per concern per year, with no deductible and no copay attached while the benefit lasts. It is a genuinely useful benefit and worth using for exactly what it is built for.
The step that catches people is the authorization code. It generally has to come from your plan’s employee assistance line before your first appointment, not requested after the fact. Skip that step and the visit is billed as an ordinary session against your regular cost sharing instead of treated as a free assistance visit. We ask about the code at the start of booking specifically so that mistake does not happen on your account.
The exact number of covered sessions, and what counts as a new concern for renewal purposes, both vary by employer, so we never assume a fixed count applies to you. What stays the same regardless of which employer’s plan you carry is the order of operations: code first, then session. Reversing that order is the most common way a no-cost benefit turns into a billed one.
If you are not sure whether your employer added an assistance programme at all, that is a fair question to bring to booking rather than something you need to figure out beforehand. We ask, and if the answer is no, or if you simply do not know, we check the regular plan behind your card instead and quote from there. Either way, nothing gets scheduled until the cost side is settled.
Two benefits, and most people only know about one
Here is the part worth saying directly. An employee assistance programme and the regular health plan behind it are two separate benefits, administered under the same Optum umbrella but running on different rules. A great many people only ever learn about the first one, because it is the benefit their employer mentions in onboarding paperwork or a wellness email, and the second one is easy to miss entirely until it becomes relevant.
That gap has a real effect on how people show up in a therapy room. Somebody who used all their assistance sessions dealing with a specific stretch, a hard month at work, a family situation that would not resolve, often assumes the sessions running out means the coverage is finished. They stop, sometimes at the exact point the work was starting to get somewhere, not because the issue resolved but because they believed the benefit had. A person who books again after learning the health plan behind that same Optum-administered card usually covers ongoing outpatient therapy is often walking back into a conversation they left unfinished, carrying whatever changed in the meantime along with them.
We are not claiming every plan behind an Optum card covers ongoing therapy, and we cannot state any specific plan’s terms from here without looking. What we do is check both benefits for you, the assistance programme and the regular plan, and tell you plainly which one applies and what it costs, so the decision to keep going or to stop is one you make on purpose rather than one that happens by default because nobody mentioned there was a second benefit at all.
Who books here
Adults 18 and older across Norwich reach Optum through a local government job, a public-education role, or another employer whose plan runs behavioral health through the same network sitting behind a UnitedHealthcare or UMR card. People come in for anxiety, depression, ongoing stress management, burnout, and the kind of boundary issues that show up once a demanding stretch at work finally slows down enough to notice them.
MindView has no office in Norwich, and every session is by secure video with a clinician licensed in New York. See the Norwich location page for the full list of plans covered here, part of our statewide New York coverage.
You do not need a diagnosis to book, and you do not need to know in advance which of the two Optum-administered benefits applies to you. A sense that the free sessions covered a stretch but did not finish it is a reasonable enough reason to call back and find out what comes next.
That applies whether the original reason for calling was a specific event or something harder to point to, a general sense that the demands of a public-facing or public-sector job had built up faster than a handful of sessions could unwind. Either way, the next step is the same: tell us where you left off, and we take it from there.
From here to a first session
Have your Optum, UnitedHealthcare, or UMR card ready, and note whether your employer offers an assistance programme. If it does and you have not used it yet, call the number on the card first for an authorization code. If you have already used those sessions, book directly and we check the regular plan behind the same card instead.
Book online; it takes about 30 seconds, and we verify the rest before anything is confirmed. A first session is an intake, not treatment: what brought you in, the background that matters to it, what you want different, and a baseline reading using standardized measures that later sessions get checked against. From there you set a recurring weekly time, with the cost side already settled.
What Optum covers here
- •Optum is the behavioral health network behind a UnitedHealthcare or UMR card, not a plan sold on its own. Your medical card and your therapy benefit can carry two different names for one membership.
- •An employee assistance programme, where an employer has added one, usually covers a set number of sessions at no cost, with no deductible and no copay while it lasts.
- •The authorization code for an assistance session has to come from your plan's employee assistance line before the first visit, or it bills as an ordinary session instead.
- •Once assistance sessions run out, your regular plan cost sharing applies: a copay, coinsurance, or the rest of a deductible, never the full fee.
- •Cost sharing on the regular benefit is set by each employer's plan design, so we verify your specific plan rather than quoting one number for everybody.

What does therapy here actually look like?
The first three sessions follow a clear structure, so you always know what is coming next.
- Getting started
Your first session is an intake. Your therapist asks what brought you in and about your history, and you rate the intensity of what you are feeling from 0 to 10. That becomes your baseline. You set a recurring weekly time before you leave.
- Mapping what is behind it
Your therapist walks through your life across stages, looking for the patterns and strengths behind what brought you in. You can decline any question and keep any answer short.
- Writing the plan together
You and your therapist build the plan together. Goals are tied to what you came in for, each with concrete objectives, plus one personal goal that matters to you.
- Ongoing
Weekly sessions work the plan. Once a month you and your therapist review standardized measures together to see whether it is working, and the plan is adjusted from what they show.
Therapy here is measured, not guessed
Once a month you have a measurement-based care review. You complete standardized measures, and your therapist reviews the trend with you. If something is not working, the plan changes. Regular therapy is the work. The review is the navigation system that keeps it pointed at the right target.
Sessions are weekly for the first two months to build a foundation, then frequency is reassessed with you. You set the pace, and you share only what you are comfortable sharing.

Optum questions
My card says UnitedHealthcare but you list Optum. Is that a problem?
No, it is the same membership described two ways. The behavioral health line on a UnitedHealthcare or UMR card connects to Optum, which is why the two names show up in different places on one benefit. We verify coverage under whichever name is printed on your card, so there is nothing you need to reconcile yourself before booking.
My employer gives me a few free counseling sessions. Is that all the mental health coverage I have?
Almost certainly not, and this is the question worth asking before the sessions run out rather than after. An employee assistance programme and a health plan are two separate benefits. Once the assistance sessions end, most plans of this design pick up ongoing therapy under regular cost sharing. We check both benefits and tell you what each one gives you.
How do the free assistance sessions actually work?
Call your plan's employee assistance line first and get an authorization code before your first appointment. Without that code in place beforehand, the visit is billed as an ordinary session against your regular cost sharing rather than treated as a free assistance visit.
What happens after the assistance sessions run out?
Your plan's regular cost sharing takes over: a copay, a coinsurance percentage, or the remainder of a deductible you have not yet met. It is never the full session fee. Because cost sharing is set by your employer's plan design, we confirm your specific plan and give you the number before that transition happens.
Does MindView have a Norwich office?
No. Every Norwich session is by secure video with a clinician licensed in New York, and sessions are online everywhere we practice, offices included. You do not need to travel anywhere for an appointment, and the assistance-programme or plan check happens before you book, not at an in-person visit.
Does a local government job in Chenango County mean I automatically have an Optum assistance benefit?
No, and we would not claim that. Local government payroll is a large share of jobs here, which is one reason the assistance-versus-plan question comes up often, but whether a specific employer offers the programme, and what it covers, is a fact about that employer's plan design, not about the county.
