Why MindView
Most therapy in Canandaigua has no structure. Ours has four stages and a scoreboard.
Plenty of practices take Optum. What you get here is one format for every client: a full intake, a written treatment plan, and standardized measures reviewed with you every month, so you can see whether it is working.
- 01
Intake
What is actually going on, rated 0 to 10 as your baseline.
- 02
Your history
Why it is happening. History, relationships, work, health.
- 03
Treatment plan
Written and collaborative, built against those causes.
- 04
Monthly review
Standardized measures, reviewed with you. You see the trend.
A license is where our training starts, not where it ends.
Every clinician is state-licensed before they see a single client. Then they train with us across every modality, and how to match one to the problem in front of them.

Optum in Canandaigua, in short
MindView Therapy is in-network with Optum and sees Canandaigua adults by secure video across New York State. Optum is the behavioral health side of a UnitedHealthcare or UMR card, so many members find their medical card says one name while their therapy line says another. Some employers also add an Optum employee assistance program with a set number of no-cost sessions. We check which route applies to you before booking.
Local government education in Ontario County accounts for 4,358 jobs across 34 worksites, 8.1 percent of every job in the county. Public employers are among the most likely to fold an employee assistance programme into a benefits package, which is how most people meet the name Optum in the first place. The useful part is not that the sessions are free, it is what happens when they stop.
The card says one name, the therapy line says another
MindView Therapy is in-network with Optum, and Canandaigua adults are seen by secure video anywhere in New York State. Optum does not sell a health plan of its own. It is the behavioral health network working behind a UnitedHealthcare or UMR card, so the name printed on the front of your wallet card and the name that comes up when you call about therapy can be two different words describing the same membership.
That mismatch is the single most common question we hear before a first session. It is not a card error, and it does not mean two separate plans are involved. We verify coverage under whichever name is actually printed on your card, so there is nothing for you to reconcile on your own before booking.
UMR is the other administrator name that shows up in this same pattern on some cards, a separate company that also sits on the Optum behavioral health network. If your card carries either name on the medical side, the practical answer stays the same: we check what applies to you and confirm it before booking, regardless of which one is printed on the front.
Some Optum members also carry an employee assistance benefit through their employer, a short run of no-cost sessions layered on top of the regular plan. That benefit runs on its own schedule and its own rules, starting with who in Canandaigua tends to have access to one in the first place.
34 school worksites and 4,358 jobs
Local government education accounted for 4,358 jobs across 34 worksites in Ontario County in 2025, 8.1 percent of the county’s 53,686 total jobs, at an average annual pay of $55,741. That is a county figure rather than a Canandaigua city figure: QCEW counts worksites and payroll at the county level, and Canandaigua sits inside Ontario County alongside every other school system in it.
Employers of that shape, public and concentrated in education, are among the more likely to attach an employee assistance benefit to their group coverage, since it is a comparatively low-cost addition to a plan already being bought in bulk. That is the practical reason an Optum page belongs to Ontario County at all, not a claim about any single district’s specific benefits package.
A benefit like that usually shows up first as a handful of free sessions rather than as anything permanent. What actually gets carried into the first session is rarely abstract: sleep that will not settle before a hard week, a stomach that stays tight on the drive in, irritability that shows up at home by evening, or the flat, worn out mood that sets in once a stretch of extra hours finally lets up. An intake and a few weekly sessions are enough room for that kind of thing to get named out loud and sorted from an ordinary bad week. They are rarely enough time to finish changing any of it.
None of that describes any specific Ontario County teacher, aide, or administrator, and the jobs count cannot tell us how many of the 4,358 local education positions actually carry an Optum-administered assistance benefit. What it shows is the shape of the employer base here: public, concentrated in education, and large enough that this kind of benefit design is a familiar structure rather than an unusual one.
Assistance sessions and the authorization code
An employee assistance benefit typically covers a set number of sessions at no cost, commonly a handful per issue each year, with no deductible and no copay attached while it lasts. It is a genuinely useful benefit and worth using ahead of anything else, but the mechanics around it matter as much as the sessions themselves.
The authorization code is the part that catches people. It has to come from your plan’s employee assistance line before your first session, not after. Without a code in hand ahead of time, the visit is typically billed as an ordinary session against your regular plan cost sharing instead of counted as a free assistance visit. We ask about this at the start of booking specifically so that ordering does not go wrong.
The exact number of sessions, and what counts as a new issue for renewing them, both vary by employer, so we never assume a fixed count applies to you. What stays the same regardless of which Ontario County employer is behind your card is the sequence itself: the code comes first, the session comes second.
Most plans print the assistance line’s phone number on the back of the card, sometimes under a name other than Optum. That call typically takes a few minutes and produces both the authorization code and a plain answer on how many sessions your specific plan currently offers.
The week the free sessions end
The week an assistance allowance runs out is one of the more common points where a course of work stops, not because the work stopped mattering but because a decision arrived that nobody had planned for at the outset. Building that decision into the first session, rather than discovering it in the sixth, is the more useful way to use a benefit shaped like this one.
Once the free sessions are used, your plan’s regular cost sharing takes over the way it would if you had started there. That is a copay, a flat amount owed for a visit, a coinsurance percentage of the allowed charge, or the remainder of a deductible you have not yet met. It is never the full session fee, and it is never a balance billed for the difference.
Because that cost sharing is set by each employer’s plan design, no single number describes every Optum member in Canandaigua. We check your specific plan and tell you what the next session costs before the free ones run out, so the transition is something you decide ahead of time rather than something you find out from a statement.
A deductible on the regular benefit resets on whatever date your employer’s plan year begins, which is not always January 1. If other medical costs have already met it by the time the assistance sessions end, only the coinsurance percentage may apply going forward, without a second deductible stacked underneath it. We confirm where you stand on that as part of the same benefits check.
New York State requires most commercial health plans to cover outpatient mental health care on the same footing as medical care under the state’s mental health parity law. That protection follows plans regulated in New York, and it does not automatically extend to a plan bought through another state or to every self-funded employer plan, which is one more reason we confirm your specific plan rather than assume the state rule applies to it.
Who books here
Adults 18 and older in Canandaigua reach Optum through a school district, a municipal job, or another employer that routes behavioral health through a UnitedHealthcare or UMR card. People come in for anxiety, depression, burnout, everyday stress management, and the adjustments that fall under life transitions work.
MindView has no office in Canandaigua, and every session is by secure video with a clinician licensed in New York. See the Canandaigua location page for the full list of plans covered here.
You do not need a diagnosis to book, and you do not need to wait until an assistance benefit is nearly gone before starting. A rough sense that a stretch of the year has gotten harder to carry is reason enough to look into it now.
From here to a first session
Have your Optum, UnitedHealthcare, or UMR card ready, and note whether an employee assistance benefit applies to you. If it does, call the number on the card first for an authorization code. Then book online; it takes about 30 seconds, and we verify the rest.
A first session is an intake rather than treatment: what brought you in, the background that matters to it, what you want different, and a baseline reading using standardized measures that later sessions get checked against. From there you set a recurring weekly time, with the cost already settled ahead of whatever week the free sessions end, if that applies to you.
What Optum covers here
- •Optum is the behavioral health network working behind a UnitedHealthcare or UMR card. The name on your medical card and the name on your therapy benefit can differ while describing the same membership.
- •Employee assistance sessions are typically a fixed number at no cost each year, with no deductible and no copay attached while they last.
- •An authorization code from your plan's employee assistance line generally has to exist before your first session, or the visit bills as an ordinary one instead.
- •Once assistance sessions are used up, regular plan cost sharing takes over, a copay, a coinsurance percentage, or the remainder of a deductible, never the full session fee.
- •New York State requires most commercial plans to cover outpatient mental health care on the same footing as medical care, though that protection follows plans regulated in New York and does not automatically extend to coverage bought elsewhere or to every self-funded plan.

What does therapy here actually look like?
The first three sessions follow a clear structure, so you always know what is coming next.
- Getting started
Your first session is an intake. Your therapist asks what brought you in and about your history, and you rate the intensity of what you are feeling from 0 to 10. That becomes your baseline. You set a recurring weekly time before you leave.
- Mapping what is behind it
Your therapist walks through your life across stages, looking for the patterns and strengths behind what brought you in. You can decline any question and keep any answer short.
- Writing the plan together
You and your therapist build the plan together. Goals are tied to what you came in for, each with concrete objectives, plus one personal goal that matters to you.
- Ongoing
Weekly sessions work the plan. Once a month you and your therapist review standardized measures together to see whether it is working, and the plan is adjusted from what they show.
Therapy here is measured, not guessed
Once a month you have a measurement-based care review. You complete standardized measures, and your therapist reviews the trend with you. If something is not working, the plan changes. Regular therapy is the work. The review is the navigation system that keeps it pointed at the right target.
Sessions are weekly for the first two months to build a foundation, then frequency is reassessed with you. You set the pace, and you share only what you are comfortable sharing.
Use your Optum benefits and get started.

Optum questions
My card says UnitedHealthcare, but you list Optum. Is that a problem?
No, and it is the question we hear most before a first session. The behavioral health line on a UnitedHealthcare or UMR card connects to Optum, so both names can describe the same membership. We verify coverage under whichever name is printed on your card, so there is nothing to reconcile on your end first.
My school district offers a few counseling sessions at no cost. How does that work with you?
Call your plan's employee assistance line first and get the authorization code, then book with us. Without that code in place before your first session, the visit is typically billed as an ordinary session against your regular plan cost sharing instead of a free assistance visit.
What happens the week my free sessions run out?
Your plan's regular cost sharing takes over, a copay, a coinsurance percentage, or the remainder of a deductible you have not yet met. We check your specific plan and tell you that number before the free sessions end, not after, so the change is something you plan for rather than find on a bill.
I work for a public employer in Ontario County. Do I need a referral before booking?
Usually not. Outpatient therapy on most plans built this way is self-referred, meaning you book directly rather than routing through a primary care visit first. A minority of plan designs add a step, and that is one of the things we confirm during your benefits check, before your first session rather than after it.
Does MindView have a Canandaigua office?
No. Every Canandaigua session is by secure video with a clinician licensed in New York, from anywhere inside the state. Offices we operate elsewhere are named as offices only, never as a place clients are seen, and nothing about your Optum benefit changes based on where you happen to be sitting for the call.
Can I buy an Optum plan directly?
No. Optum is the network your coverage points to, not a plan sold on its own, so there is nothing to shop for under that name directly. What matters for booking is what your card actually owes, whether it reads Optum, UnitedHealthcare, or UMR, and we verify that before your first session either way.
