What is Optum and why is it on my card?
Optum is UnitedHealth Group’s behavioral health arm. It administers the mental health network and processes therapy claims for a long list of plans, including UnitedHealthcare, Oxford Health Plans, and Oscar Health.
That is why the name shows up where you did not expect it. Your card says UnitedHealthcare or Oxford, but when you call the mental health number on the back, you reach Optum. Or your therapist asks whether you have Optum and you say no, because the word is not printed on the front of your card.
The rule of thumb: the plan name is on the card, and Optum is often the network behind the therapy benefit. Give us the card. Working out which network applies is our job, not yours.
Does MindView take Optum?
Yes. MindView Therapy is in the Optum behavioral health network in New York, at our Queens and Buffalo offices and by telehealth anywhere in the state.
Because we are in-network, you pay your plan’s copay or coinsurance rather than the full session fee. You are not billed the difference.
What will I pay?
Optum administers the network, but your plan sets the cost share. That is the distinction that decides your bill.
Most people pay a copay per session. Some plans use coinsurance, a percentage of the negotiated rate. Some apply a deductible first, so you pay the negotiated rate until it is met. Because the plan behind the Optum network varies, so does the number.
We verify your benefits before your first session and tell you what you will owe. We will not invent a figure to make a page read better.
What about EAP sessions?
Optum also administers employer EAP benefits, and this is worth separating clearly. An EAP is a different product: a set number of prepaid counseling sessions, usually with its own provider network and its own authorization code.
EAP and outpatient behavioral health are not the same benefit. People often assume they are and then get a bill they did not expect. When we verify your coverage, we tell you which benefit you are actually using.
How do I get started?
Book online through our secure client portal. The form takes about two minutes and is mostly checkboxes. Have your card nearby, whatever name is on it.
We verify your coverage, confirm your cost, and get you scheduled. We are accepting new clients and respond within one business day. Call (646) 493-4007 if you would rather read the card to a person.
How to check your Optum coverage
- 1
Find your insurance card. It may say Optum, or it may say UnitedHealthcare, Oxford, Oscar, or another plan name with Optum behind it.
- 2
Call the mental health or behavioral health number on the back of the card. If it routes to Optum, Optum is your therapy network.
- 3
Sign in to your plan's member portal, or to liveandworkwell.com, to view your outpatient behavioral health benefit.
- 4

Optum questions
Is MindView Therapy in the Optum network?
Yes. We are in the Optum behavioral health network in New York, at our Queens and Buffalo offices, and for telehealth across New York State.
My card does not say Optum. Am I still covered?
Often yes. Optum is the behavioral health network behind UnitedHealthcare, Oxford, Oscar, and other plans. The card carries the plan name and Optum sits behind the therapy benefit. Send us the card and we will work out which network applies.
What will therapy cost me through Optum?
You pay your plan's copay or coinsurance rather than the full session fee, and any unmet deductible may apply first. Optum administers the network, but your plan sets the cost share, so we verify your specific benefits before your first session.
Do I need a referral?
Most Optum-administered commercial plans do not require a referral for in-network outpatient therapy. Some HMO designs do. We check your plan when we verify benefits.
Does Optum cover online therapy?
Telehealth is covered on most Optum-administered plans at the same benefit level as an in-office visit. We confirm this for your specific plan.
Is my employer EAP the same as my Optum benefit?
No. An EAP is a separate product with a set number of prepaid sessions and a different provider network. EAP and outpatient behavioral health are not the same benefit, and we tell you which one you are using.
