Why MindView
Most therapy in Canandaigua has no structure. Ours has four stages and a scoreboard.
Plenty of practices take Meritain Health. What you get here is one format for every client: a full intake, a written treatment plan, and standardized measures reviewed with you every month, so you can see whether it is working.
- 01
Intake
What is actually going on, rated 0 to 10 as your baseline.
- 02
Your history
Why it is happening. History, relationships, work, health.
- 03
Treatment plan
Written and collaborative, built against those causes.
- 04
Monthly review
Standardized measures, reviewed with you. You see the trend.
A license is where our training starts, not where it ends.
Every clinician is state-licensed before they see a single client. Then they train with us across every modality, and how to match one to the problem in front of them.

Meritain Health in Canandaigua, in short
MindView Therapy is in-network for Meritain Health members and sees Canandaigua adults by secure video across New York State. Meritain administers self-funded employer plans and rents the Aetna network, so your card says Meritain while the network printed underneath says Aetna. Because the benefit is designed by an employer rather than sold as a retail plan, we check what your specific plan owes per session and give you that number before you book.
Self-funding means the employer pays the claims and hires an administrator to run the plan, and it needs enough people on the payroll to absorb a bad year. Ontario County has 2,895 business establishments, 1,435 of them with fewer than five employees and 144 with fifty or more. That distribution explains why the arrangement exists where it does, and why the only honest answer to what a session costs is a lookup rather than a figure.
A card that says Meritain and a network that says Aetna
Yes. MindView Therapy is in-network for Meritain Health members, and Canandaigua adults are seen by secure video anywhere in New York State. Meritain is a third-party administrator owned by Aetna, and it rents Aetna’s provider network rather than building one of its own. That is why the name on the front of a Meritain card and the network name printed underneath it are not the same word, and both are correct at once.
For booking purposes the two names resolve to one answer. We check the plan against the Aetna network we already participate in, confirm what your specific benefit actually covers, and tell you the per-session cost before anything goes on the calendar. Nothing about the two-name card changes what you do next, how long it takes to find out, or where the session happens: every visit is by secure video, wherever in New York State you are that week.
2,895 workplaces, and 144 with fifty or more people
Meritain plans exist because an employer decided to fund its own health claims instead of buying a policy from an insurer, then hired an administrator to process them and rented a network to price them against. That arrangement needs a payroll large enough to absorb a year where claims run high, which is part of why it clusters among bigger employers rather than the smallest ones.
County Business Patterns counts 2,895 business establishments in Ontario County. 1,435 of them, close to half, employ fewer than five people. 2,454 of the total, 84.8 percent, employ fewer than twenty. Only 144 establishments report fifty employees or more, seven of them in the 500-to-999-employee band, and Ontario County has no establishment at all reporting a thousand employees or more.
That size distribution is the honest reason a self-funded, Meritain-administered benefit is a plausible thing to encounter in Ontario County. It is not a statement about how many people actually carry the card. County Business Patterns counts worksites, not covered lives, and it says nothing about which of the 144 larger establishments chose Meritain, chose a different administrator, or bought a fully insured plan instead. That is a figure we cannot verify and will not guess at.
An employer with enough scale to fund its own claims usually keeps that arrangement running from one plan year to the next rather than switching structure annually, which is different from the volatility of shopping a policy on the open market. The part that actually changes year to year is not whether the benefit exists but what rules it carries, which is exactly why a fresh check at the start of each plan year is worth doing even for a returning client.
What you owe, and who set that number
What you owe for a session is a copay, a coinsurance percentage of the allowed amount, or whatever remains of a deductible you have not yet met. It is never the full session fee, and you are never billed for the difference between what the plan pays and what a session costs.
Who sets that number is the employer, not Meritain and not us. A self-funded plan is designed line by line by whoever is paying the claims, which is why two Ontario County households holding the same Meritain card through two different employers can land on two different deductibles, two different coinsurance percentages, and two different rules about what needs a review first. We do not quote an average cost, because for a plan built this way there is not a meaningful one to give.
A deductible resets once a year, on whatever date your employer’s plan year begins, which is not always January 1. If you have already met it through other medical costs earlier in the year, the coinsurance percentage alone may apply to a session, with no additional deductible amount stacked on top. We confirm exactly where you stand on that deductible in the same benefits check that finds the per-session cost.
New York State law requires most commercial health plans to cover outpatient mental health care on the same footing as medical care. That requirement binds insurance policies the state regulates directly. A self-funded employer plan is generally structured to sit outside that regulation, which is a caveat worth knowing going in rather than a reason to expect less coverage. Which rule actually governs your plan is one of the things we confirm at verification, alongside the cost itself.
Knowing the whole shape of a benefit before session one
A benefit built by an employer, rather than bought off a shelf, is not only a copay. It can carry a review point partway through a course of care, or a check-in step before sessions continue, and details like that live in the same plan documents behind the 144 larger Ontario County establishments where self-funding is even feasible to run. Someone whose weekly sessions start because sleep will not settle and a low mood has not lifted often carries that same uncertainty about the benefit into the first session, whether or not it is ever named as the reason for calling.
That is the practical case for asking early, and it is a limited one. The establishment count does not predict any individual’s plan design, and it says nothing about how many Ontario County households specifically carry a Meritain card, which stays a figure we will not guess at. What it shows is only that a self-funded arrangement is a reasonable thing to hold here. What actually decides the rules is the one document almost nobody reads before it matters, which is why we read it for you.
Checking early is what turns a first session into a plan that can run for months instead of restarting every time a plan detail surfaces unexpectedly. We ask about a review or authorization requirement at verification and tell you what we find, so the shape of the benefit is known before session one rather than discovered partway into a course of care.
Who books here
Adults 18 and older reach Meritain in Canandaigua through an employer plan large enough to self-fund, often the kind that also builds in an intake process and a check-in step ahead of ongoing sessions. People come in for anxiety, depression, the accumulated weight covered by life management counseling, the pressures behind work-related counseling, and ordinary stress management that has stopped resolving on its own.
MindView has no office in Canandaigua, and every session is by secure video with a clinician licensed in New York. See the Canandaigua location page for the full list of plans covered here, part of our statewide New York coverage.
You do not need a diagnosis to book, and you do not need to already know your plan’s rules before you start. Bringing the card is enough. Looking up the rest is ours to do.
From here to a first session
Have your Meritain member ID card ready, and note the network name printed underneath it. Book online; it takes about 30 seconds. We verify your specific benefit, including whether a review point or authorization step applies to your plan, and tell you the per-session cost before anything is scheduled.
A first session is an intake rather than treatment: what brought you in, the background that matters to it, what you want different, and a baseline reading using standardized measures that later sessions get checked against. From there, you set a recurring weekly time that fits your schedule, with the shape of your benefit already known rather than something left to find out later.
What Meritain Health covers here
- •Your card reads Meritain, and the provider network printed underneath it reads Aetna. Both are accurate at the same time and neither is a mistake.
- •Meritain does not sell a plan. It administers claims for an employer that funds its own benefit and hired Meritain to run it.
- •You pay a copay, a coinsurance percentage, or the remainder of a deductible, never the full session fee and never a balance for the difference.
- •We check at verification whether your plan carries a review point or an authorization step and tell you what we find before your first session.
- •New York's mental health parity rule binds state-regulated insurance policies. A self-funded employer plan is generally structured outside that rule, which is worth knowing rather than assuming.

Your first session is an intake, by secure video from anywhere in New York State.
What does therapy here actually look like?
The first three sessions follow a clear structure, so you always know what is coming next.
- Getting started
Your first session is an intake. Your therapist asks what brought you in and about your history, and you rate the intensity of what you are feeling from 0 to 10. That becomes your baseline. You set a recurring weekly time before you leave.
- Mapping what is behind it
Your therapist walks through your life across stages, looking for the patterns and strengths behind what brought you in. You can decline any question and keep any answer short.
- Writing the plan together
You and your therapist build the plan together. Goals are tied to what you came in for, each with concrete objectives, plus one personal goal that matters to you.
- Ongoing
Weekly sessions work the plan. Once a month you and your therapist review standardized measures together to see whether it is working, and the plan is adjusted from what they show.
Therapy here is measured, not guessed
Once a month you have a measurement-based care review. You complete standardized measures, and your therapist reviews the trend with you. If something is not working, the plan changes. Regular therapy is the work. The review is the navigation system that keeps it pointed at the right target.
Sessions are weekly for the first two months to build a foundation, then frequency is reassessed with you. You set the pace, and you share only what you are comfortable sharing.

Meritain Health questions
My card says Meritain but the network says Aetna. Which am I?
Both, and it is not a mistake. Meritain administers the plan your employer funds, and the network printed underneath it is Aetna's. For booking purposes we are in-network for you either way, and we check the plan against the network we already participate in before your first session.
Why does my coworker pay a different amount than I do?
Because a self-funded plan is built by the employer rather than purchased off a shelf. Two Ontario County households can carry the same Meritain card through two different employers and land on two different copays, two different coinsurance percentages, or two different deductibles. That is exactly why we look yours up instead of quoting an average.
Could my plan limit how many sessions I get, or require approval first?
Some employer plan designs add a review point or an authorization step, and some do not. We do not assume either way for a Meritain plan generally. We check yours at verification and tell you what we find before your first session, so the answer is known ahead of time rather than discovered mid-course.
Does the New York therapy parity rule apply to my plan?
Often not. That rule binds insurance policies regulated by New York State, and a self-funded employer plan is generally structured to sit outside it. That is a caveat worth knowing, not a reason to expect thinner coverage. What actually applies to your plan is something we confirm directly.
Does MindView have a Canandaigua office?
No. Every Canandaigua session is by secure video with a clinician licensed in New York, from anywhere in the state. Our physical offices are in Queens and Buffalo, and they are offices rather than places clients are seen in person.
