Every clinician state-licensed

Why MindView

Most therapy in Staten Island has no structure. Ours has four stages and a scoreboard.

Most practices in Staten Island deliver whatever approach the therapist you happened to get was trained in. We run one format for every client, and we measure it.

  1. 01

    Intake

What is actually going on, rated 0 to 10 as your baseline.

  2. 02

    Your history

Why it is happening. History, relationships, work, health.

  3. 03

    Treatment plan

Written and collaborative, built against those causes.

  4. 04

    Monthly review

Standardized measures, reviewed with you. You see the trend.

A license is where our training starts, not where it ends.

Every clinician is state-licensed before they see a single client. Then they train with us across every modality, and how to match one to the problem in front of them.

Staten Island does its feeling in the car - the argument replayed on the expressway, the composure rebuilt in a driveway - and a therapy built on portable skills fits a borough that regulates alone.

MindView Therapy provides DBT-informed individual therapy for adults on Staten Island, by telehealth throughout New York; the nearest of our offices sits in Jamaica, Queens.

What DBT actually is

Four skill modules, each with a plain function. Mindfulness notices the feeling early, while it can still be worked with. Distress tolerance holds the worst stretch without adding damage. Emotion regulation lowers the intensity at its source over time. Interpersonal effectiveness manages the asking, refusing and repairing that big feelings complicate.

Format honesty first: this is individual DBT, the skills taught one-on-one. There is no skills group and no phone coaching, and the DBT specialty programs this borough historically pointed to, most of them in Manhattan, are a different, fuller model. What this page offers is the individual component, delivered without the bridge.

What a session involves

You name the recurring moments, and each week one of them gets slowed down and examined: what fired, what followed, what it cost, where a skill could have entered. The skill gets taught, assigned to that specific moment, practiced in the real week and reviewed the next session. Specificity is the engine; generic advice is what this format exists to replace, and a stalled week is treated as sizing information rather than backsliding.

Around it, MindView’s standard structure: intake with baseline ratings, then your full history and a collaborative treatment plan, weekly sessions, standardized measures monthly.

What DBT is used for

Anger that arrives ahead of judgment, spiking anxiety, relationship conflict that never resolves because it never de-escalates, and the private floods nobody at work would believe. No diagnosis is required, and the skills were never limited to one.

Who provides it

DBT at MindView is delivered by Nirja Mistry, whose practice combines DBT and CBT techniques within a relational, psychodynamically informed frame, seeing adults across New York by telehealth. One clinician, named in advance, is the honest architecture of the offer.

DBT on Staten Island

Only 23.3% of Staten Island workers commute by public transportation (US Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates, table B08006), the lowest share of the boroughs we serve. This borough moves alone, by car, and that shapes where its emotional life happens: no crowd to perform composure for, and no crowd to hide in either. The car, the kitchen after everyone sleeps, the driveway before walking in, that is where the hard minutes live here.

The signature local pattern is the replay loop: the conversation re-argued for forty minutes on the expressway until the anger arrives home fresher than it left the event. DBT counters it specifically. Noticing the replay as an act you are performing rather than a truth-finding mission. A deliberate attention shift with an actual destination. An emotion-regulation move made before arrival instead of an apology made after. In treatment those counters get assigned to your actual drives and reviewed weekly. More at our Staten Island page.

Insurance

DBT-informed individual therapy is billed under standard psychotherapy codes; there is no separate DBT rate. We are in-network with UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Medicare, Oscar Health, Meritain Health, Oxford Health Plans, Cigna, Optum, Highmark BCBS WNY, Univera Healthcare and MagnaCare. We check your plan before the first session and tell you what you will pay.

Questions people ask before booking

The DBT programs I found are all in Manhattan. Is video DBT here real DBT? It is individual DBT with a named clinician: the four modules, weekly practice, measured progress. It is not a group program, and we say that plainly rather than let the word DBT imply one.

I do my worst thinking on the drive home. Can therapy use that? Yes. The replay loop is standard material here, and it gets specific counters assigned to specific drives.

Who would I see? Nirja Mistry. You know the clinician before you book, because there is exactly one.

Is DBT only for borderline personality disorder? No. Intense emotions and their costs are the territory, and no diagnosis is required to start.

Do you take my insurance? We are in-network with the New York plans listed above, verified before the first session.

If you are in crisis

We are not a crisis service and we do not provide between-session phone coaching. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988, any hour, free and confidential. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
