On an island where people stay, the family roles never get the reset that moving away gives everyone else: the responsible one is still responsible at forty, three blocks from where it started.
MindView Therapy provides Internal Family Systems therapy for adults on Staten Island, by telehealth throughout New York; the nearest of our offices sits in Jamaica, Queens.
What IFS actually is
IFS reads the mind as parts with jobs, most of them assigned young. The responsible one, the peacemaker, the funny one, the difficult one: family systems hand these out early, without asking, and the parts that took them keep the roles running for as long as the system keeps calling, which on this island can be a very long time. In this model none of that is disorder, and no part is an enemy. The parts are protectors, working from old job descriptions.
Beneath them, the model holds, sits Self, a calm and curious core that predates every role. Reaching it, and letting it decide who answers when the old role is called, is what the therapy actually does.
What a session involves
Attention goes inward in these sessions, one part at a time, at a pace the parts themselves get a say in. You find where a part operates, and you ask it questions directly rather than analyzing it: what is your job, who gave it to you, what do you fear would happen if you set it down? Speaking with a part instead of about it is the method’s core move, and parts answer more readily than anyone expects, once someone finally asks instead of argues.
Protectors come first, and painful material opens only with your permission. Around it runs MindView’s standard course: intake with baseline ratings, then your full history and a collaborative treatment plan, weekly sessions, standardized measures monthly.
What IFS is used for
People bring this work their old roles that no longer fit, their trauma and childhood trauma, harsh self-criticism and low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and the particular tiredness of being cast as the same character for forty years running. Evidence, honestly: a growing research base, increasingly studied for trauma, younger in the literature than CBT, and rarely brief, which is proportionate to renegotiating roles that took decades to set.
IFS on Staten Island
This is a borough of settled adults, with among the lowest young-adult shares of the boroughs we serve, 21.3% aged 18 to 34 (US Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates, table B01001), and settledness has a specific consequence for parts work: the childhood cast is still local. Sunday dinners, shared driveways, the sibling twenty minutes away. The system that assigned your role can re-assign it weekly, which is why patterns that would have faded with distance stay employed here.
Everyone knows the experience this produces: being twelve at every family dinner. You arrive an adult and revert on contact, because the system recognizes you and the part that handled that system takes the wheel at the door. IFS works on the inside of exactly that. Not moving away, not cutting anyone off, and no blame, staying is not the pathology. The work is teaching the part it has options now, so that when the old role gets called, someone else inside can answer. More at our Staten Island page.

Questions people ask before booking
Everyone here knows everyone. How private is this? Sessions run by video from your own home. No waiting room, no parking lot, nothing visible to anyone, and confidential by law and by design.
I am not leaving my family. Is IFS going to push distance? No. The work changes your inside relationship to the role, not your address and not your loyalty.
Is this like family therapy? No. It is individual adult work (18+). The family system appears only as it lives in you.
Does having parts mean something is wrong with me? No. Parts are normal and universal in this model, and none get treated as disorders.
How long does it take? Usually longer than brief work, and the pace is reviewed against monthly measures rather than promised.
