Two questions decide whether DBT is the right thing to look for. Do your emotions arrive faster than your thinking about them, and does the gap between how you react and how you wanted to react keep costing you something? If both are yes, you are in the right place. If neither is, a different approach is probably the better use of your time and we would rather say that here than at session four.
MindView Therapy offers DBT-informed individual therapy for adults across Syracuse by telehealth throughout New York.
What DBT actually is
The name is unhelpful, so start there. “Dialectical” refers to two things being true at the same time: you are doing the best you can, and something has to change. Therapies that only offer the first leave you where you are. Therapies that only push the second land as blame. DBT is designed to hold both, which is why it often works for people who found other therapy either too gentle or too critical.
What it teaches is four sets of skills. Mindfulness, meaning noticing what is happening before reacting to it. Distress tolerance, for the peak of a bad moment, where the only goal is getting through it without making things worse. Emotion regulation, the slower work of lowering how often those peaks come. Interpersonal effectiveness, for asking and refusing without the exchange going wrong.
What we offer, and what we do not
Full-model DBT is a program: individual therapy, a weekly skills group, phone coaching between sessions, and a clinician consultation team. Most of the outcome research studied that entire package.
We provide DBT-informed individual therapy. No skills group and no between-session phone coaching. For plenty of people that is the right level of structure, and for some it is genuinely not enough. You should know which one you need before you book. Ask at intake and you will get a straight answer.
What a session involves
You bring the week, and when something went badly you walk through it slowly, link by link. What happened, what you noticed in your body, what you thought, what you did, what followed. Working through that chain is the central technique, because somewhere in the sequence is a point where something else was possible. That is where a skill gets attached.
Then you rehearse the skill and agree how you will practice it. Rehearsal is not optional decoration. A skill you have only discussed is not available in the moment you need it.
What DBT is used for
It was built for people whose emotions run fast and intense, and that remains where the evidence is strongest. It is now used more widely for anger, mood swings, relationship struggles and stress management, and often alongside anxiety or depression work when intensity rather than content is the obstacle.
It is not the first answer to everything. A specific avoided fear responds better to a targeted exposure protocol. Wanting to understand a pattern’s origin points to psychodynamic therapy. Read the full method on our dialectical behavior therapy page.
Who practices it here
DBT at MindView is delivered by Nirja Mistry, who integrates DBT and CBT techniques within a relational and psychodynamic frame and sees adults throughout New York, including Syracuse, by telehealth.
One named clinician rather than an implied department. That is the accurate picture, and it also means you know in advance who you would be working with.
Doing this work in Syracuse
Syracuse is the youngest city we serve in New York. The median age is 31.8 and 34.0% of residents are aged 18 to 34, against 22.4% in Queens (US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020-2024 five-year estimates). Syracuse University alone enrolls 22,928 students (New York State Education Department, 2024-25).
That demographic matters specifically for this method. Emotion regulation difficulties typically show up in late adolescence and the early twenties, which is exactly the band this city is weighted toward, and it is also the age at which people are most likely to be encountering the problem for the first time without a name for it. A large share of the people searching for DBT here have never had a therapist and are working from something they read.
The practical constraint is continuity. Skills build on one another, so a DBT course tolerates gaps badly, and this is a city where a lot of people move annually and leave for summers. Video sessions hold a course together across an address change, though not across a state line: your therapist is licensed in New York and you need to be in the state during a session. If you are leaving for a summer, raise it early so the work can be planned around it. 88.1% of Syracuse households have a broadband subscription (ACS 2020-2024, which counts what households subscribe to rather than what is available at the address).
Insurance
DBT-informed individual therapy is billed under the standard psychotherapy codes, the same as any other talk therapy session. There is no separate DBT rate.
We are in-network with UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Medicare, Oscar Health, Meritain Health, Oxford Health Plans, Cigna, Optum, Highmark BCBS WNY, Univera Healthcare and MagnaCare. We check your plan before the first session and tell you what you will pay.
Questions people ask before booking
Do I need a diagnosis to ask for DBT? No. It was developed with one population and the skills were never restricted to it.
Is this the full program with a group? No. Individual DBT-informed therapy only, with no skills group and no phone coaching. We will tell you at intake if you need the full model.
I am a student and I go home for the summer. Does that work? Only if home is in New York. Outside the state, sessions have to pause. Say so early and the course can be planned around the calendar.
Can I use my parents’ insurance? Often yes, if you are on their plan and we accept it. Send the details when you book and we will check before the first session.
How long does it take? Skills work usually runs several months, depending on what you are working on.
