Why MindView

Most therapy in Staten Island has no structure. Ours has four stages and a scoreboard.

Most practices in Staten Island deliver whatever approach the therapist you happened to get was trained in. We run one format for every client, and we measure it.

  1. 01

    Intake

What is actually going on, rated 0 to 10 as your baseline.

  2. 02

    Your history

Why it is happening. History, relationships, work, health.

  3. 03

    Treatment plan

Written and collaborative, built against those causes.

  4. 04

    Monthly review

Standardized measures, reviewed with you. You see the trend.

A license is where our training starts, not where it ends.

Every clinician is state-licensed before they see a single client. Then they train with us across every modality, and how to match one to the problem in front of them.

Stability and stuckness run on the same schedule, and from the outside nobody can tell which one a settled life is; ACT gives the person living it a way to check.

MindView Therapy provides acceptance and commitment therapy for adults on Staten Island, by telehealth throughout New York; the nearest of our offices sits in Jamaica, Queens.

What ACT actually is

ACT works the space between a routine and a direction. Defusion loosens the thoughts that keep a routine unexamined, the it-is-fines and the this-is-just-lifes. Acceptance makes room for whatever an honest look turns up, and it is not resignation; it is the willingness to know. Mindfulness is deliberate attention to the life actually being lived. Values name what you would choose on purpose, and committed action adds one chosen act a week to a schedule that has been running on autopilot.

The method here is additive, not demolitionist. Nothing about ACT requires dismantling a life that works; it simply asks whether the working life is pointed anywhere you chose, and helps you adjust the heading if not.

What a session involves

You bring the routine as it actually runs, unpolished, and the work is the audit: which parts of the week trace back to a real choice, and which are simply what happened next, repeated until it looked permanent. Then one values-first hour gets added to the week, planned and protected like anything else on the calendar, and whatever shows up when you keep it, ease, guilt, relief, resistance, becomes the next session’s working material.

The frame is MindView’s standard: intake with baseline ratings, then your full history and a treatment plan naming the methods, weekly sessions, standardized measures monthly. Courses commonly land between 8 and 16 sessions, a range that depends on your goals and never hardens into a promise.

What ACT is used for

The method carries substantial research support across anxiety, depression, stress and burnout, and chronic pain and illness. ACT also fits perfectionism and the situation this page is about: a life that runs smoothly and answers no questions.

ACT on Staten Island

This is a borough of built routines rather than forming ones; 19.1% of residents are aged 20 to 34 (US Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates, table B01001), so the values check here is rarely about which life to start. It is about the one already running: the job, the house, the Sunday dinner, all functioning smoothly, and underneath them the quiet question nobody scheduled, whether functioning was ever actually the goal.

The test worth taking home tonight: contentment survives attention; numbness does not. Sit with the routine deliberately, the commute, the couch, the calendar, and pay real attention to it for a few minutes. Contentment under that kind of attention feels like a choice you would make again. Numbness feels like an absence with furniture in it. What the exercise reveals is information, not a verdict, and if what you find worries you, depression is worth reading and intake sorts it honestly. Either way, the house and the dinner stay; what changes is that one hour a week starts belonging to something you chose. More at our Staten Island page.

Insurance

ACT is billed under standard psychotherapy codes; there is no separate ACT rate. We are in-network with UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Medicare, Oscar Health, Meritain Health, Oxford Health Plans, Cigna, Optum, Highmark BCBS WNY, Univera Healthcare and MagnaCare. We check your plan before the first session and tell you what you will pay.

Questions people ask before booking

My life works. Isn’t therapy for when things fall apart? Working and chosen are different questions, and this course starts from strength rather than crisis. Plenty of people do their best work in therapy before anything breaks.

Can I do sessions from home in the evening? Yes. That is the standard shape here, a video hour after the day ends, with no trip attached.

Is ACT going to tell me to change my whole life? No. It adds one chosen hour and lets you decide what the results mean. Most lives change by degrees, not demolitions.

Is acceptance settling? No. Acceptance is what makes an honest look possible; settling is what happens when the look never gets taken.

How long does it take? Commonly 8 to 16 sessions, goal-dependent, with the monthly measures confirming or correcting the estimate as you go.

If you are in crisis

We are not a crisis service. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988, any hour, free and confidential. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
