Most people arrive at DBT through a specific frustration: they know what they should have done, they knew it at the time, and they did the other thing anyway. That gap between knowing and doing, under pressure, is what this method is built to close. It is a skills problem rather than an insight problem, and it responds to rehearsal rather than understanding.
MindView Therapy offers DBT-informed individual therapy for adults across Yonkers by telehealth throughout New York.
What DBT actually is
The name comes from a deliberate contradiction the method refuses to settle: you are doing the best you can, and something still needs to change. Both at once. Therapy that only offers acceptance leaves the problem intact, and therapy that only pushes change reads as blame, which is why people who have bounced off both often find this one fits.
There are four skill sets. Mindfulness is noticing what is happening before responding to it. Distress tolerance covers the peak of a bad moment, where the only goal is getting through without making it worse. Emotion regulation is the longer project of making those peaks less frequent. Interpersonal effectiveness is asking for something or refusing it without the conversation going sideways.
What we offer, and what we do not
Full-model DBT is a program rather than a weekly hour: individual therapy, a skills group, phone coaching between sessions, and a consultation team behind the clinicians. The research base largely studied that whole structure.
We offer DBT-informed individual therapy. No skills group, no between-session phone coaching. For many people that is the right amount of structure. For some it is not enough, and that is worth establishing before you book. Ask at intake and you will get a direct answer about which one your situation calls for.
What a session involves
You bring the week, and when something went badly you reconstruct it link by link: the trigger, what you noticed, what you concluded, what you did, what followed. Doing this slowly is the central technique, because every chain has a link where a different move was available, and that link is where the work goes.
The skill that fits is then taught and rehearsed in session, with an agreement about how you will practice it. Rehearsal is the point. A skill you have only talked about will not show up when the moment arrives.
What DBT is used for
The method was built for emotions that arrive fast and hit hard, and that remains where the evidence is strongest. It is now used more broadly for anger, mood swings, relationship struggles and stress management, and often runs alongside work on anxiety or depression when intensity rather than content is the difficulty.
It is not the automatic answer. A specific avoided fear responds better to a targeted exposure protocol, and a wish to understand where a pattern originated points toward psychodynamic therapy. Read the full method on our dialectical behavior therapy page.
Who practices it here
DBT at MindView is delivered by Nirja Mistry, who integrates DBT and CBT techniques within a relational and psychodynamic frame and sees adults throughout New York, including Yonkers, by telehealth.
That is one named clinician rather than an implied department, which is both the accurate picture and useful information: you know who you would be working with before you book.
Doing this work in Yonkers
Yonkers has the commuting profile that makes this particular method hardest to sustain in an office and easiest to sustain by video.
The mean travel time to work is 35.6 minutes, and 20.4% of commuters travel an hour or more each way (US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020-2024 five-year estimates). Only 11.6% of workers here work from home, below the Queens rate of 12.9%, so a hybrid schedule is not the escape valve for most people. What that produces is a long day with a hard edge at both ends.
That matters for DBT specifically because of when the skills are needed. Distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness are for the commute home after a bad meeting, the argument at the end of a long day, the moment the reserves are gone. Those moments cluster in exactly the hours an in-office appointment competes with. Working from where you actually are, at an hour that does not require a further trip, is what keeps the course running week to week, and skills work is cumulative enough that gaps cost real progress.
The demographics point the same way. The median age is 39.9 and 23.8% of residents are aged 18 to 34, with Sarah Lawrence College enrolling 1,781, the smallest student population of the New York cities we serve (ACS 2020-2024; New York State Education Department, 2024-25). Most people booking here are established in work and family life and are fitting therapy into a full schedule rather than an open one. 92.0% of households have a broadband subscription (ACS 2020-2024, measuring what households subscribe to rather than what is available at the address).

Questions people ask before booking
Can I do a session from my office in Manhattan? Yes, if you have somewhere private enough to talk. You need to be physically in New York State, which both Yonkers and Manhattan satisfy.
Do I need a diagnosis to ask for DBT? No. It was developed with one population and the skills were never restricted to it.
Is this the full program with a skills group? No. Individual DBT-informed therapy only. If you need the full model we will tell you at intake.
My schedule is unpredictable. Is that a problem? Say so at intake. Skills work is cumulative, so it is better to build the plan around a difficult schedule than to let the course go intermittent.
How long does it take? Skills work usually runs several months, depending on what you are working on.
