Brooklyn living removes the buffer zones - the hallway argument is audible, the roommate’s mood is ambient, the ex is two stops away - and emotions that detonate at close range need skills built for close range.
MindView Therapy provides DBT-informed individual therapy for adults in Brooklyn, by telehealth throughout New York. Our nearest office is in Jamaica, Queens.
What DBT actually is
Four modules, each with a plain job. Mindfulness notices the surge while it is still a signal rather than an event. Distress tolerance gets you through the peak ten minutes without collateral. Emotion regulation works longer-term on making the surges smaller and rarer. Interpersonal effectiveness covers asking, refusing and repairing, the three moves that intense feelings sabotage first.
Format, honestly: this is individual DBT, the skills taught and practiced one-on-one. There is no skills group and no between-session phone coaching, and we would rather say so here than let you assume the full program.
What a session involves
One real moment from the week gets slowed to frame-by-frame: the trigger, the surge, the move, the aftermath. The point in the chain where a different move was available becomes the target, the matching skill gets taught and rehearsed, and the week practices it where the emotions actually fire, which in this borough is rarely more than a wall away.
The container is MindView’s standard course: intake with baseline ratings, then your full history and a collaborative treatment plan, weekly sessions, standardized measures reviewed monthly.
What DBT is used for
Emotions that arrive faster than thoughts, reactions regretted an hour later, relationships that swing hard. In practice that means anger, spiking anxiety, relationship conflict on a loop, and couples flashpoints where one person’s intensity drives the cycle. It was developed for one population and its skills were never limited to it; no diagnosis is required.
Who provides it
DBT at MindView is the work of one named clinician: Nirja Mistry, who folds DBT and CBT techniques into a relational, psychodynamically informed practice and sees adults across New York by telehealth. We name one person because one person is the truth; there is no implied DBT department behind this page, and you know before booking exactly who you would work with.
DBT across Brooklyn
Close range is the local condition. 25.1% of Brooklyn residents are aged 18 to 34 (US Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates, table B01001), the years when emotion intensity is most often mislabeled as personality, and much of that living happens at density: shared apartments, thin walls, roommate economics, no spare room to cool down in. Distress tolerance is built for the moment the apartment shrinks; emotion regulation, for the feedback loop of living inside other people’s noise.
The interpersonal module has a very current gym: the group chat. The ask you cannot bring yourself to make, the boundary that comes out sideways as a blowup, the read-receipt spiral at 1am, all of it is interpersonal effectiveness territory, and the skills translate to plain language without the acronym soup: say what you actually want, hold the line without escalating, repair without re-litigating. More at our Brooklyn page.

Questions people ask before booking
Is this a full DBT program with a skills group? No. Individual DBT with one clinician, the skills taught one-on-one. No group, no phone coaching, said plainly.
Half of Brooklyn seems to be doing DBT. How do I know this is the real thing? By its checkable substance: named skills from the four modules, practiced between sessions, reviewed against standardized measures monthly.
Who would I actually see? Nirja Mistry. One named clinician is the honest picture, and it means the person on this page is the person on your screen.
Is DBT only for borderline personality disorder? No. Intense emotions, impulsive reactions and stormy relationships are the territory, and no diagnosis is required to start.
My roommates are always home. How private can these sessions be? Headphones plus a bedroom hour, a scheduled empty-apartment window, or a parked car. Privacy logistics get planned at booking.
