Why MindView
Most therapy in Ithaca has no structure. Ours has four stages and a scoreboard.
Plenty of practices take Meritain Health. What you get here is one format for every client: a full intake, a written treatment plan, and standardized measures reviewed with you every month, so you can see whether it is working.
- 01
Intake
What is actually going on, rated 0 to 10 as your baseline.
- 02
Your history
Why it is happening. History, relationships, work, health.
- 03
Treatment plan
Written and collaborative, built against those causes.
- 04
Monthly review
Standardized measures, reviewed with you. You see the trend.
A license is where our training starts, not where it ends.
Every clinician is state-licensed before they see a single client. Then they train with us across every modality, and how to match one to the problem in front of them.

Meritain Health in Ithaca, in short
MindView Therapy is in-network for Meritain Health members and sees Ithaca adults by secure video anywhere in New York State. Meritain administers plans that employers fund themselves and rents the Aetna network to do it, which is why your card carries one name and the network printed underneath carries another. Both are correct. Your cost sharing was set by your employer, so we check it before anything is scheduled.
Nearly a third of working Ithaca residents, 4,724 of 14,961, are employed by private not-for-profit organizations. Across New York State that share is 12.4 percent. Only 43.1 percent of the city works for a private for-profit employer, against 65.8 percent statewide. A not-for-profit is an employer like any other when it comes to health benefits, and one of the ways employers of that size run a plan is to fund it themselves and hire somebody else to administer it.
The name on the card and the network underneath
Yes. MindView is in-network for Meritain Health members, and Ithaca adults are seen by secure video anywhere in New York State. Meritain administers health plans that employers fund themselves, and it does this by renting the Aetna provider network rather than building its own. That is why a Meritain card carries the Aetna network name printed underneath it, and why both names on that card are accurate at once.
It is a genuinely common source of confusion, and a reasonable one. Nothing about seeing two company names on one insurance card suggests they describe the same coverage, until the structure behind a third-party administrator is understood. For booking purposes, the practical answer is simple regardless of which name catches a reader’s eye first: coverage gets checked against both names, so nobody has to decide independently which one is the real insurer.
That two-name structure is not an occasional quirk on a handful of cards. It applies to Meritain cards as a category, which is why the answer stays the same regardless of which specific employer a reader works for.
Three columns, and Ithaca’s are not the state’s
Employed Ithaca residents split across three broad categories: private for-profit, private not-for-profit, and government. Of 14,961 employed Ithaca residents, 4,724, 31.6 percent, work for private not-for-profit employers, against 26.6 percent across Tompkins County and 12.4 percent statewide. Only 6,448, 43.1 percent, work for private for-profit employers, well below the statewide figure of 65.8 percent.
Ithaca’s not-for-profit share is more than double the state’s, and its for-profit share runs more than twenty points below it. That distribution shapes which kind of employer most working Ithaca residents actually have, though it says nothing about which specific insurance carrier any of those employers chose.
None of this is a claim about which specific organizations in Ithaca fall into which category, and no institution is named here for exactly that reason. The class-of-worker breakdown describes the shape of the local workforce, not any individual employer’s identity.
Tax status is not a benefit design
A private not-for-profit employer is an employer like any other when it comes to structuring a health plan. Nothing about being organized as a nonprofit prevents an employer from funding its own plan and hiring an administrator like Meritain to run it, exactly the same option available to a for-profit employer of comparable size.
That distinction matters because it is easy to assume otherwise. A reader working for a nonprofit in Ithaca might reasonably expect a different kind of benefit than a reader working for a for-profit company, but the tax classification alone does not predict the design. Only the specific plan document settles what a given employer actually chose.
It is worth stating twice in different words, because it is genuinely the one distinct point that matters most here: the label on an employer’s tax return and the design of its health plan are two separate decisions, made independently of each other, and confusing them leads to the wrong assumption about what a card actually covers.
What self-funded means for what you owe
Once a Meritain card is confirmed to apply, the practical question is who wrote the specific benefit, and the answer is the employer, not Meritain itself. The employer decides the plan design, including whether copay, coinsurance, or deductible applies first, and that design can vary meaningfully between two employers using the same administrator.
This is why a general description of Meritain cost sharing would not actually help a specific reader. Two Ithaca households could both hold Meritain cards through different employers and be describing plans that share almost nothing beyond the network name printed on them.
Most self-funded plans also carry an out-of-pocket maximum for the plan year, a ceiling past which the plan covers remaining costs in full, and where that ceiling sits is likewise specific to the employer rather than something Meritain standardizes. A copay is a flat amount per visit, coinsurance is a percentage of the allowed cost charged after a deductible, and a deductible is a running total paid first, reset on whatever schedule the employer’s plan sets.
Where New York parity stops on a card like this
New York’s cost-sharing parity rule limits a therapy copay to no more than a primary care copay, but only on policies regulated in New York. Most Meritain arrangements run through a self-funded plan, and a self-funded plan generally sits outside that state regulation, regardless of which network administers it.
Coverage for therapy still applies either way. What can differ is whether this specific protection reaches a given plan, and that depends on how the employer structured the benefit rather than on anything printed on the card. Confirming this is part of the same verification that happens before booking, so the question gets a real answer instead of an assumption based on the network name.
This limit is not unique to Meritain. Any self-funded plan carries the same gap in New York’s parity protection, regardless of which administrator or network name sits on the card. What makes it especially relevant on a Meritain card is that self-funded arrangements sit close to the default shape behind it rather than one option among several equally likely ones.
What these figures do not prove
The class-of-worker figures above describe Ithaca’s employment base, not who uses Meritain specifically. Nothing about that spread tells us who uses Meritain specifically, and we will not guess at it. A member count for Ithaca or Tompkins County does not exist in any published source.
What the employment data supports is a narrower point worth stating plainly: an employer’s tax status is not a benefit design, and the two get confused constantly. Reading more into the not-for-profit share than that would overstate what the figures actually show.
The check we run before you book
Adults 18 and older across Ithaca reach MindView on a Meritain card through an employer’s self-funded plan. People come in for anxiety, depression, burnout, the pressures covered by work-related counseling, and boundary issues.
Working for one of Ithaca’s many not-for-profit employers, the kind behind 31.6 percent of the city’s jobs, rarely means the benefit itself is thin, but it can mean weighing what to commit to weekly against a paycheck that was never structured to compete with a for-profit salary, plus the quiet stress and worry of a grant-funded position that is not guaranteed to renew. A clinician here is used to building a plan around that math directly rather than assuming it away.
31.6 percent of Ithaca’s jobs sitting at a not-for-profit describes the shape of the local economy, not any one person’s finances, and working at a nonprofit is not itself a reason to start or delay therapy.
MindView has no office in Ithaca, and every session is by secure video with a clinician licensed in New York. See the Ithaca location page for the full list of plans covered here, part of MindView’s statewide New York coverage.
Nobody needs to already understand a specific employer’s plan design before reaching out. Working out what a Meritain card actually covers is the first thing the benefits check handles, not something expected in advance.
Have your Meritain member ID card ready, and note the network name printed underneath it. Book online; it takes about 30 seconds. We verify your employer’s plan design and tell you the per-session cost, deductible included, before anything is scheduled.
A first session is an intake rather than treatment: what brought you in, the history that matters to it, and a baseline reading using standardized measures that later sessions get checked against. A recurring weekly time gets set before the session ends, with the cost already confirmed.
What Meritain Health covers here
- •You pay your plan's copay, coinsurance, or remaining deductible instead of the full session fee. You are never billed the difference.
- •Meritain administers self-funded employer plans and rents the Aetna network, so the provider network printed on your card is Aetna's.
- •Because a self-funded plan is designed by the employer, two people holding the same Meritain card can owe very different amounts per session.
- •New York State's cost-sharing parity rule does not reach a plan an employer funds itself, which most Meritain arrangements are.
- •We verify your specific benefit and confirm the per-session cost before anything is scheduled.

Your first session is an intake, by secure video from anywhere in New York State.
What does therapy here actually look like?
The first three sessions follow a clear structure, so you always know what is coming next.
- Getting started
Your first session is an intake. Your therapist asks what brought you in and about your history, and you rate the intensity of what you are feeling from 0 to 10. That becomes your baseline. You set a recurring weekly time before you leave.
- Mapping what is behind it
Your therapist walks through your life across stages, looking for the patterns and strengths behind what brought you in. You can decline any question and keep any answer short.
- Writing the plan together
You and your therapist build the plan together. Goals are tied to what you came in for, each with concrete objectives, plus one personal goal that matters to you.
- Ongoing
Weekly sessions work the plan. Once a month you and your therapist review standardized measures together to see whether it is working, and the plan is adjusted from what they show.
Therapy here is measured, not guessed
Once a month you have a measurement-based care review. You complete standardized measures, and your therapist reviews the trend with you. If something is not working, the plan changes. Regular therapy is the work. The review is the navigation system that keeps it pointed at the right target.
Sessions are weekly for the first two months to build a foundation, then frequency is reassessed with you. You set the pace, and you share only what you are comfortable sharing.

Meritain Health questions
My card says Meritain but the network says Aetna. Which one am I?
Both, and it is not a mistake. Meritain administers the plan the employer funds, and the network printed underneath is Aetna's. We are in-network for you either way, and we verify the specifics against your employer's plan.
I work for a nonprofit in Ithaca. Is my plan different?
Not by definition. 4,724 of 14,961 employed Ithaca residents work for private not-for-profit employers, and a nonprofit's tax status does not determine its benefit design any more than a for-profit's does. The plan documents behind your specific card settle it.
Why does a colleague pay a different amount than I do?
Because a self-funded plan is designed by the employer rather than bought off a shelf. Two Ithaca households can hold the same Meritain card through different employers and land on a different copay, coinsurance percentage, or deductible. That is why we look up your specific plan.
Does New York's parity rule protect my plan?
Not necessarily. New York's cost-sharing parity rule applies to New York-regulated policies and does not reach a plan an employer funds itself, which describes most Meritain arrangements. Coverage still applies. That specific protection may not, and we confirm which situation applies to you.
Does MindView have an Ithaca office?
No. Every Ithaca session is by secure video with a clinician licensed in New York State, from anywhere inside it. MindView's offices are in Queens and Buffalo, named as offices rather than places where Ithaca clients are seen in person.
