Why MindView
Most therapy in Ithaca has no structure. Ours has four stages and a scoreboard.
Plenty of practices take Aetna. What you get here is one format for every client: a full intake, a written treatment plan, and standardized measures reviewed with you every month, so you can see whether it is working.
- 01
Intake
What is actually going on, rated 0 to 10 as your baseline.
- 02
Your history
Why it is happening. History, relationships, work, health.
- 03
Treatment plan
Written and collaborative, built against those causes.
- 04
Monthly review
Standardized measures, reviewed with you. You see the trend.
A license is where our training starts, not where it ends.
Every clinician is state-licensed before they see a single client. Then they train with us across every modality, and how to match one to the problem in front of them.

Aetna in Ithaca, in short
MindView Therapy is in-network with Aetna and sees Ithaca adults by secure video anywhere in New York State. Aetna sells no individual plan in New York, so an Aetna card here came through a job. Tompkins County's private payroll is concentrated in one supersector, which means a lot of local Aetna cards were designed by the same kind of employer, and none of them by the person holding one. We check yours before booking.
Private education and health services accounts for 20,898 jobs across 377 Tompkins County worksites, at an average annual pay of $81,463. That is 43.5 percent of the 48,051 jobs covered countywide across every kind of employer. When one supersector carries that much of a county's payroll, the benefit design most local workers meet is the one that sector tends to buy, and on an Aetna card the design is the only thing that varies.
Where an Aetna card in Ithaca comes from
Yes. MindView is in-network with Aetna, and Ithaca adults are seen by secure video anywhere in New York State. There is a fact about Aetna that shapes everything else on this topic: Aetna does not sell an individual health plan in New York. Nothing exists to browse or compare on your own. Every Aetna card in this city arrived through a job, yours or a household member’s, which means the number you owe was never something you chose.
That single fact is why a benefits check matters more than a rate sheet ever could. The plan document behind a specific card lives with an employer’s HR or benefits administrator, not on any page a search engine could surface, which is why confirming it directly is the only reliable path to an accurate number.
A marketplace plan publishes its terms for anyone to browse before buying. An employer plan does not. There is nothing public to compare, which is exactly the gap a direct benefits check exists to close.
One supersector, most of the county’s payroll
Private education and health services accounts for 20,898 jobs across 377 Tompkins County worksites, at an average annual pay of $81,463. That is 43.5 percent of the 48,051 jobs covered countywide across every kind of employer, private, local government, and state government combined. For comparison, the county’s total private employment across every industry is 42,284 jobs across 2,658 worksites.
A payroll concentration like that tells us where the county’s jobs sit. It does not tell us which carrier any specific employer chose, and it says nothing about who any individual reader works for. What it does establish is that a large share of Ithaca’s working population meets an employer benefit shaped by the same broad sector, even though the specific plan design still varies employer to employer.
The remaining 27,153 covered jobs in the county sit across every other private, local, and state employer combined. None of these figures identify a specific employer, and none of them say anything about which insurance carrier a given worksite chose. They describe the shape of the county’s payroll, nothing further.
What your employer decided for you
An Aetna benefit is built by an employer’s HR and benefits team, sized to a budget and a workforce rather than picked out by any one employee. That is a structurally different decision than an individual shopping for coverage. An employer weighs premium cost against deductible size against network breadth across an entire staff, and the resulting plan is a compromise none of its members had a hand in shaping.
None of the tradeoffs behind that compromise are visible to an employee holding the card. The plan document itself, not a general description of what Aetna typically covers, is what actually determines a specific person’s cost, which is exactly why we verify it rather than describe a typical design.
Most employer plans also set an out-of-pocket maximum for the year, a ceiling past which the plan covers the remaining cost at no charge. Reaching that ceiling through other medical care earlier in the year can mean sessions later that year cost nothing out of pocket, even on a plan that started with a high deductible. We check where a specific plan stands against that ceiling too.
Deductible, copay and coinsurance, in plain terms
A copay is a flat amount charged per visit, the same every time regardless of how many sessions came before it. Coinsurance is a percentage of the allowed cost, charged after a deductible is met, so the dollar amount moves with the visit. A deductible is a running total paid before the plan shares the cost at all, and it resets on a schedule the employer’s plan sets, typically once a year.
Which of the three a reader meets first depends entirely on the employer’s design. Some Aetna plans lead with a copay for outpatient therapy from the first visit. Others route therapy through the deductible, so early sessions in a plan year cost more out of pocket than later ones on the same plan. Neither design is more typical in Ithaca than anywhere else we can verify, which is why the specific plan gets checked rather than assumed.
What changes on January 1
A calendar-year deductible resets on January 1, and the dollars paid toward it in December do not carry forward. If an employer’s plan routes therapy through the deductible, a session in the first week of January can cost meaningfully more than the same session had in November, even though nothing about the care itself changed.
This catches people off guard more than almost anything else about an employer plan, because the plan and the therapist both stayed the same. Only the calendar moved. Knowing that ahead of time, and knowing where a specific deductible stands before booking, is the difference between a predictable cost and a surprising one.
Where New York parity stops
New York State requires that on a New York-regulated policy, a therapy copay cannot exceed the copay for a primary care visit. That protection applies to plenty of Aetna plans held in Ithaca. It has a limit worth knowing: it reaches policies regulated in New York, and it does not automatically reach a plan an employer funds itself or buys through an out-of-state arrangement.
Whether a specific employer’s plan falls into that first category or the second is not something we can determine in the abstract, because it depends on how the employer structured the benefit, not on anything printed plainly on the card. Confirming it is part of the same check that happens before booking, so the parity question gets a real answer.
Two Aetna cards can carry the same logo and the same plan name printed on the front while one sits on a policy the parity rule reaches and the other sits on an arrangement it does not. Nothing about the card itself signals which is which, which is exactly the gap a benefits verification is built to close.
Booking with a plan you did not design
Adults 18 and older across Ithaca reach MindView on an Aetna card through a job, whether their own or a household member’s. People come in for anxiety, depression, burnout, everyday stress management, and the pressure of perfectionism.
One of the 377 Tompkins County worksites that make up the private education and health services sector rarely makes money the reason someone waits to book. More often it is finding an hour a supervisor’s calendar will not flag, or stepping out without a colleague noticing, since a large worksite means plenty of witnesses to a sudden gap in the day. A recurring weekly session with a clinician has to fit inside that kind of privacy before it happens at all.
20,898 jobs in one sector describes Tompkins County’s payroll, not which of those workers are quietly protecting their privacy at work, and holding a job in that sector is not itself a reason to start or delay therapy.
MindView has no office in Ithaca, and every session is by secure video with a clinician licensed in New York. See the Ithaca location page for the full list of plans covered here, part of MindView’s statewide New York coverage.
Nobody needs to already understand their plan’s deductible or coinsurance before booking. A rough sense that something has gotten harder than it should be is reason enough to start, with the benefits check handling the rest.
Have your Aetna member ID card ready. Book online; it takes about 30 seconds, and nothing about a specific employer’s plan design needs to be sorted out in advance. We verify the benefit and tell you the per-session cost, deductible included, before anything is scheduled.
A first session is an intake rather than treatment: what brought you in, the background that matters to it, and a baseline reading using standardized measures that later sessions get checked against. A recurring weekly time gets set before the session ends, with the cost already confirmed.
What Aetna covers here
- •You pay your plan's copay, coinsurance, or remaining deductible instead of the full session fee. You are never billed the difference.
- •Aetna sells no individual plan in New York, so every Aetna card here came through an employer or a family member's employer.
- •Because your employer chose the plan design, two people holding the same Aetna card can owe very different amounts per session.
- •New York State's parity rule limits a therapy copay to no more than your plan's primary care copay, on a New York-regulated policy.
- •We verify your specific benefit and confirm the per-session cost before anything is scheduled.

We verify your employer plan's benefit and tell you the per-session cost, deductible included, before anything is scheduled.

Your first session is an intake, by secure video from anywhere in New York State.
What does therapy here actually look like?
The first three sessions follow a clear structure, so you always know what is coming next.
- Getting started
Your first session is an intake. Your therapist asks what brought you in and about your history, and you rate the intensity of what you are feeling from 0 to 10. That becomes your baseline. You set a recurring weekly time before you leave.
- Mapping what is behind it
Your therapist walks through your life across stages, looking for the patterns and strengths behind what brought you in. You can decline any question and keep any answer short.
- Writing the plan together
You and your therapist build the plan together. Goals are tied to what you came in for, each with concrete objectives, plus one personal goal that matters to you.
- Ongoing
Weekly sessions work the plan. Once a month you and your therapist review standardized measures together to see whether it is working, and the plan is adjusted from what they show.
Therapy here is measured, not guessed
Once a month you have a measurement-based care review. You complete standardized measures, and your therapist reviews the trend with you. If something is not working, the plan changes. Regular therapy is the work. The review is the navigation system that keeps it pointed at the right target.
Sessions are weekly for the first two months to build a foundation, then frequency is reassessed with you. You set the pace, and you share only what you are comfortable sharing.

Aetna questions
Can I buy an Aetna plan myself in Ithaca?
No. Aetna sells no individual health plan anywhere in New York State. Every Aetna card here arrived through a job, either your own or a family member's. If you do not have employer coverage, the individual marketplace runs through other carriers, and we can still check whatever coverage you currently hold.
Why does a colleague pay a different amount per session than I do?
Because your employer designs the benefit, not Aetna. Two Ithaca households can carry the same Aetna card through different employers and land on different copays, different coinsurance percentages, and different deductibles. That is why we look up your specific plan rather than quoting an average.
I work in education or health care in Tompkins County. Does that change my coverage?
Not by itself. Private education and health services accounts for 20,898 of the county's 48,051 covered jobs, but the sector a plan comes from does not determine its design. We check the specific plan behind your card rather than assuming anything from the industry you work in.
Why is my January session more expensive than my November one?
A calendar-year deductible resets on January 1, and the dollars you paid toward it in December do not carry forward. A session booked early in the year can cost more out of pocket than the same session later on the same plan.
Does MindView have an Ithaca office?
No. Every Ithaca session is by secure video with a clinician licensed in New York State, from anywhere inside it. MindView's offices are in Queens and Buffalo, named as offices rather than places where Ithaca clients are seen in person.
