What is Oscar, and how does it cover therapy?
Oscar is a New York-founded insurer that sells individual, family, and small-business plans, many of them through the state marketplace. If you bought your own coverage rather than getting it from a large employer, there is a reasonable chance you have Oscar.
On Oscar’s New York plans, mental health and substance use care are essential health benefits. They are not an optional add-on you have to buy separately. Outpatient psychotherapy is covered as a core part of the plan.
Oscar administers its behavioral health network through Optum. That is a back-office detail rather than something you have to manage. We are in-network either way.

What will I pay?
That depends on your plan tier, and we will not invent a number.
Oscar plans are tiered. Most people pay a copay per session. Lower-tier plans, bronze in particular, can carry a deductible you have to meet before copays begin, which means you would pay the negotiated rate up front until it is met. The tier printed on your card is what drives this, so it is the first thing we look at.

Do I need a referral, and is telehealth covered?
No referral. Oscar does not require a primary care referral to see an in-network behavioral health provider. You can book a session directly, without a call to a doctor first.
Telehealth is covered. Oscar is built around virtual care more than most insurers, and it covers telehealth therapy on its New York plans. Sessions are available by video anywhere in New York, so getting to an office does not have to be the obstacle.
How do I get started?
