Somewhere between the profile, the career and the persona, a lot of people notice the presentation has a full-time manager, and that nobody has checked on the person it presents.
MindView Therapy provides Internal Family Systems therapy for adults in Brooklyn, by telehealth throughout New York. Our nearest office is in Jamaica, Queens.
What IFS actually is
Internal Family Systems models the mind as parts with jobs, and none of them, in this model, are enemies. The one relevant to a borough of self-invention is the presentation manager: the part that curates what gets said, posted and admitted, because it learned early that unmanaged truth had costs. IFS does not treat that part as vanity. It treats it as a protector with a history, and it asks what the protector expects would happen if the curation stopped.
Beneath the whole staff, the model holds, is Self, a calm and curious core that needs no management and no audience. Reaching it, and letting it lead, is the therapy.
What a session involves
Slower and more inward than most conversation. Your therapist helps you settle attention on one part, feel where it operates, and put questions to it directly rather than analyzing it from a distance: what is your job, when did you take it, what do you fear would happen if you rested? Speaking with a part instead of about it is the method’s whole pivot, and the answers are rarely the ones you would have scripted.
Protectors come first, always, and painful material opens only with your explicit agreement. Around it runs MindView’s standard course: intake with baseline ratings, then your full history and a collaborative treatment plan, weekly sessions, standardized measures monthly.
What IFS is used for
People bring IFS their trauma and childhood trauma, their shame and low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and the specific exhaustion of running a public self whose upkeep never ends.
Evidence, stated straight: a growing research base, increasingly studied for trauma, and younger in the literature than CBT. The work is usually not short, and monthly measures rather than promises keep its pace honest.
IFS across Brooklyn
Brooklyn sits at a median age of 36.5 (US Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates, table B01002), the thick of the self-construction decade, when the gap between the presented self and the felt one is widest and busiest. This is also a borough where half your friends can name their protectors, and the honest word on that: the model predates the moment. Its research base is growing and it is younger in the literature than CBT, and neither fact needs hype to be useful. One practical difference here: many excellent Brooklyn IFS practices run private-pay, and this one is in-network.
A very local protector deserves its own paragraph: irony. The part that gets to every feeling first and makes it a joke is a competent guard with a long service record, and IFS does not confiscate it. It gets asked, with genuine curiosity, what it expects would happen if something landed sincerely. People who deflect for a living tend to recognize this part immediately, which is usually the beginning of the conversation rather than the end of it. More at our Brooklyn page.

Questions people ask before booking
Half my friends are in IFS therapy. Is it actually more than a trend here? The model predates the moment and its research base is growing. It is also younger in the literature than CBT, and we say that as plainly as the rest.
Most IFS therapists I found in Brooklyn are out-of-network. Are you? We are in-network with the New York plans listed above, and benefits are verified before your first session.
Will my therapist make me drop the humor? No. Protectors are respected, not confiscated. The joke part gets curiosity, never a ban.
Do I need a trauma history for IFS to make sense? No. Inner conflict and self-criticism are reason enough, and many people start exactly there.
How long does it take? Usually longer than brief work. The pace is reviewed against monthly measures rather than promised in advance.
