OCD is harder to hide from a roommate than from a boss, and much of Brooklyn splits its rent, which means the rituals have witnesses and the witnesses have questions.
MindView Therapy provides exposure and response prevention for adults in Brooklyn, by telehealth throughout New York. Our nearest office is in Jamaica, Queens, one borough over.
What ERP actually is
The loop is always the same shape. A trigger fires, the anxiety spikes, a ritual or an avoidance brings it down, and that brief relief is what keeps the whole circuit alive, because it teaches the brain the ritual was load-bearing. Exposure and response prevention breaks the circuit deliberately: you approach the trigger in a planned step, you skip the ritual, and the anxiety, given time and nothing to feed on, falls by itself.
ERP is the most studied form of CBT for OCD and a first-line treatment. That is a description of the evidence base, not a promise about your particular course, which is why yours gets measured.
What a session involves
At the treatment-plan session you and your therapist build the exposure hierarchy, every trigger ranked from mildly annoying to currently impossible, and set the response-prevention targets, the rituals you will practice leaving undone. Steps are taken from the easy end, at a pace agreed with you, and nobody is thrown in unprepared. Consent is not a courtesy in this protocol; it is a working part of it.
The practice between sessions is where the method earns its reputation, repeated in the real spaces where the triggers live. Once a month, standardized measures get reviewed together, and a plan that has stopped moving after a fair trial gets changed.
What ERP treats
ERP is the dedicated protocol for OCD, including intrusive thoughts, mental rituals, checking, contamination fears and reassurance-seeking. The same graded structure treats phobias, panic, agoraphobia, social anxiety and avoidance-driven anxiety. You do not need a diagnosis to ask about fit, and the invisible presentations, mental review, silent counting, reassurance woven into ordinary questions, are treated as directly as anything visible.
ERP across Brooklyn
Shared housing changes the texture of OCD. The common kitchen wiped down after every use, the bathroom routine timed for an empty apartment, the reassurance question a roommate has learned to answer without looking up: 23.2% of Brooklyn residents are aged 20 to 34 (US Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates, table B01001), the shared-housing years, when rituals acquire an audience. Exposure plans here use the real shared spaces, and session privacy is solved the ordinary way, a bedroom hour with headphones, a scheduled empty-apartment window, occasionally a parked car.
Disclosure gets a straight answer too, because it is a real barrier. ERP does not require announcing a diagnosis to a household. Some rituals will pause and some rooms will get used differently as treatment proceeds, and what you tell the people you live with, if anything, is a script you own. Your therapist will help you write it or help you skip it, and either choice is respected as part of the plan. More at our Brooklyn page.

Questions people ask before booking
My roommates are always home. How do I even do sessions? Privacy logistics are a normal intake topic, not your problem to solve alone. A bedroom hour with headphones, a scheduled window when the apartment empties, or a parked car all work.
Do I have to tell my roommates I am in treatment? No. What to share, and whether, stays yours, and the plan works either way.
Will I be thrown into my worst trigger? No. The hierarchy is ranked, you start at the easy end, and every step is agreed before it is attempted.
Does ERP by video actually work? ERP has been delivered and studied by video, and your exposures live where you live, which is the point.
Is there an office in Brooklyn? Sessions for Brooklyn are by telehealth, and our nearest office is in Jamaica, Queens. Ask at booking about what fits your situation.
