There is a specific person this page is for: the one who finished a course of CBT, can recite the thought-challenging steps, and still hears the same voice say the same thing every morning.
MindView Therapy provides Internal Family Systems therapy for adults in Rochester, by telehealth throughout New York.
What IFS actually is
IFS works on a different layer than thought-challenging. Where cognitive approaches examine what a thought says, IFS is interested in who is saying it: the part of you whose job is to criticize, and the reason it believes the job is necessary. In this model the mind is a system of parts, each carrying a role, and the harsh ones are protectors, not defects. Underneath them the model locates Self, a calm and curious center that every person retains, however deeply it is buried.
That difference in target matters. Insight rarely retires a protector, because protectors are not beliefs, they are jobs. Knowing where the critic came from does not quiet it. A part keeps its job until it trusts that something else can hold the risk, and building that trust is what the therapy spends its time on.
What a session involves
Instead of arguing with the critical voice, you get introduced to it. Your therapist helps you locate the part, notice how it shows up, and question it directly: what is your role, what would happen if you dropped it? The shift from talking about a part to talking with it is small to describe and large to experience.
The sequencing is protective by design. Parts that guard pain are engaged before the pain itself, and nothing painful is opened without your agreement. The course runs on MindView’s standard structure: intake with baseline ratings, then your full history and a collaborative treatment plan, then weekly sessions with standardized measures reviewed monthly.
What IFS is used for
People bring IFS their trauma and childhood trauma, their shame and low self-esteem, perfectionism, anxiety, depression, and above all the exhausting experience of being split: wanting and dreading the same thing, deciding and un-deciding, building and undermining.
On evidence, we say it straight: IFS has a growing research base, is increasingly studied for trauma, and is younger in the literature than CBT. It also tends to run longer than brief skills work, with the monthly measures keeping that honest.
IFS in Rochester
Rochester’s therapy landscape is dense with cognitive and behavioral offerings, and many people here have already been through one. This page exists for what can remain afterward: the skills helped the symptoms, and the relationship with yourself did not move. That is not a failure of CBT, and it is not a claim that IFS is better. They aim at different targets. One tests the thought; the other asks the part producing it what it is protecting.
It is also a young city, with 27.9% of residents between 20 and 34 (US Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates, table B01001), and those are loud years for a parts system: the builder, the doubter, the one who wants to leave and the one afraid to, all working at full volume while a self gets assembled. IFS gives that noise a structure to be heard in. Sessions run by video wherever in New York you are. More at our Rochester page.

We are in-network with UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Medicare, Oscar Health, Meritain Health, Oxford Health Plans, Cigna, Optum, Highmark BCBS WNY, Univera Healthcare and MagnaCare. Questions people ask before booking
I already did CBT here. Would IFS just repeat what I know? No. CBT examined your thoughts’ accuracy. IFS engages the parts producing them, which is a different kind of work with a different feel. Different, not better.
My connection drops sometimes. Does that wreck this kind of session? A brief drop is an interruption, not a rupture. Your therapist agrees a phone fallback with you in advance, so a bad minute costs a minute, not a session. Flag it at booking.
Is IFS evidence-based? It has a growing research base and is increasingly studied for trauma. It is younger in the literature than CBT, and we tell you that plainly rather than rounding up.
Will I be pushed into trauma memories? No. Protectors are engaged first, and painful material is opened only with your permission. The ordering is a core rule of the model, not a courtesy.
Do I need a diagnosis? No. Many people come for self-criticism or inner conflict that never had a diagnosis attached, and that is a legitimate reason to start.
If you are in crisis
