Every family appoints one, usually without a vote: the strong one, who fixes, pays, shows up and absorbs, and whose own list has been at the bottom of the pile for years.
MindView Therapy provides Internal Family Systems therapy for adults in the Bronx, by telehealth throughout New York. Our nearest office is in Jamaica, Queens, and this work happens from wherever you have an hour of privacy.
What IFS actually is
In the IFS model, the strong one is a part, a protector that earned its job honestly, because somebody had to, and has held it so long it cannot imagine resigning without the family collapsing. Underneath it, the model usually finds an exile: the kid who learned early that needing things was not safe, and whose needs the strong one has been outrunning ever since, at increasing speed.
None of this is pathology in IFS. Parts are how minds work, and the ones that hurt are protectors running old strategies. Beneath them all is Self, a calm and steady core that does not have to carry anything to deserve existing. The therapy is reaching it and letting it lead.
What a session involves
Your therapist guides you to one part at a time, and you ask it questions directly instead of describing it: what is your job, how long have you carried it, what do you fear would happen if you rested? The strong one has an answer to that last question, and hearing it out loud, usually for the first time in decades, is the moment this work starts moving.
Protectors are approached first, and nothing painful opens without your explicit agreement. The frame is MindView’s standard course: intake with baseline ratings, then your full history and a collaborative treatment plan, weekly sessions, standardized measures monthly.
What IFS is used for
The load this page describes, plus trauma and childhood trauma, anxiety, depression, shame and low self-esteem, and caregiver burnout. Evidence honestly: a growing research base, increasingly studied for trauma, younger in the literature than CBT. The work is rarely short, and monthly measures keep it accountable.
IFS in the Bronx
The Bronx sits at a median age of 36.0 (US Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates, table B01002), deep in the years when the strong-one role compounds: children on one side, aging parents on the other, work underneath it all, and the assumption everywhere that you will manage, because you always have. The role does not lighten with time. It accretes, and nobody else in the family can see the full weight of it, because the strong one’s whole job is making it look carried.
Two honest reassurances belong on this page. First, this therapy is not against your family. IFS assigns no blame, and loyalty stays yours; what gets worked on is the crushing weight, not the love. Second, about the guilt: for the strong one, an hour for yourself can feel like abandoning people who count on you. The reframe is practical, not sentimental. The therapy hour is maintenance on the person the entire system runs on, and the guilt itself is a part with a fear, one more voice the work can listen to rather than a verdict to obey. Questions people ask before booking
My family needs me constantly. When would I even do this? One protected video hour a week, at home, early or late. The logistics are solvable, and solving them is itself part of the point.
Is therapy going to turn me against my family? No. IFS is not about blame. Loyalty stays yours; the crushing weight is what gets worked on.
I have never done therapy. Is this a hard place to start? No. It starts with what brought you in, at your pace, and you can decline any question at any time.
Does having parts mean something is wrong with me? No. In this model parts are normal and universal, and none of them get treated as disorders.
How long does it take? Usually longer than brief work. The pace is reviewed against monthly measures rather than left open-ended.
