Most people find IFS after noticing a specific pattern: one part of them makes a plan, and another part quietly takes it apart, and no amount of discipline settles the argument.
MindView Therapy provides Internal Family Systems therapy for adults in Queens. Our office is at 89-14 Parsons Boulevard in Jamaica, and sessions are conducted by telehealth throughout New York.
What IFS actually is
Internal Family Systems starts from an observation rather than a theory: the mind is not one voice. Part of you wants to call your mother; part of you dreads the call; part of you is angry at both for wasting a Sunday on it. IFS treats that multiplicity as how minds normally work, not as a symptom of anything.
Some parts carry old pain. Others exist to keep that pain from surfacing, and they do it however they learned to: criticizing you first so nobody else gets the chance, perfecting everything, going numb, staying busy. In this model even the harshest inner voice is a protector doing a job it took on long ago. Underneath the crowd is what IFS calls Self, a calm and curious core that does not have to be built, only reached.
What a session involves
The work is slower and more inward than most talk therapy. Your therapist helps you turn attention toward one part, notice where it shows up in your body, and ask it questions instead of arguing with it. The pivotal move is speaking with a part rather than about it. Asked directly what it fears would happen if it stopped, a critic usually gives an answer that changes how you see it.
Protective parts are always approached first, and anything painful is opened only with your agreement. Around that sits the standard MindView structure: an intake with baseline ratings, your full history, and a treatment plan you build together, with weekly sessions and standardized measures reviewed monthly so pace is checked against data rather than feel.
What IFS is used for
People bring IFS their trauma, including childhood trauma they do not want to retell in detail on day one, along with low self-esteem, shame, perfectionism, anxiety, depression, and the specific exhaustion of being at war with yourself.
On evidence, the honest position: IFS has a growing research base and is increasingly studied for trauma, and it is younger in the literature than CBT. It is also usually not a short protocol. Your monthly measures, not a promised session count, are how you and your therapist judge the pace.
IFS across Queens
The inner conflict we hear most often in Queens is duty versus self: the part that carries the family’s expectations, the aging parents, the money sent home, the career that was chosen for good reasons, and the quieter part asking whether any of it was chosen at all. IFS gives both sides a seat. Neither gets argued out of existence, because in this model neither is the problem.
A related pattern: the relentless inner driver that looks from the outside like work ethic, and often carries a family’s hopes on its back. IFS does not fight that part. It asks what the critic is afraid would happen if it eased up, which is why people who bristle at “be kinder to yourself” advice can tolerate this model.
This is also unhurried, private work, and the shape of the borough matters for it. Queens has a median age of 40.7, and 30.1% of commuters travel an hour or more each way (US Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates). For a lot of adults here, patterns have had decades to settle in, and the only genuinely private hour of the day is at home after that trip, which is exactly where a video session can meet you. Questions people ask before booking
My family does not really believe in therapy. Is this private? Yes. Sessions are confidential telehealth and nobody is contacted. Planning the practical side, headphones, a closed door, even a parked car, is a normal thing to work out with your therapist.
I commute over an hour each way. How does slow-paced therapy fit that life? The session comes to you by video, so there is no second trip. And the pace is not open-ended: monthly measures show whether the work is moving.
Does having parts mean something is wrong with me? No. In this model parts are universal, and none of them are treated as disorders. The suffering comes from the conflict between them, not from their existence.
Is IFS evidence-based? It has a growing research base and is increasingly studied for trauma. It is younger in the literature than CBT, and we would rather tell you that plainly than oversell it.
Will I have to relive painful memories? No. Protective parts are worked with first, and painful material is approached only with your permission. Nothing is opened without agreement.
