ACT starts from an uncomfortable question: if a stranger watched a week of your life on tape, what would they conclude you value?
For most of us there is a gap between that answer and the one we would give out loud. Acceptance and commitment therapy works on the gap. MindView Therapy provides ACT for adults in Queens, with our office at 89-14 Parsons Boulevard in Jamaica and sessions by telehealth throughout New York.
What ACT actually is
ACT does not try to delete difficult thoughts or argue you out of them. It changes your relationship with them, so a thought like “I will mess this up” can be present without being in charge. The tools have plain names. Defusion loosens the grip of sticky thoughts. Acceptance makes room for feelings you cannot control, which is not resignation, it is redirecting effort from an unwinnable fight. Mindfulness is noticing what is actually happening. Values work names what you want your life to stand for, and committed action moves you toward it while the discomfort tags along.
What a session involves
Sessions are part conversation, part practice. You bring the situations where you get stuck, your therapist works the relevant skill with you, and the hour ends with one concrete action chosen because it serves a value, not because it feels comfortable. That weekly action is the engine of the method; the talking exists to aim it.
The MindView structure holds around it: baseline ratings at intake, a treatment plan that names the ACT methods being used, and standardized measures reviewed monthly so the plan answers to data. A typical course often runs 8 to 16 sessions depending on goals. That is a range, not a promise.
What ACT is used for
ACT carries a substantial research base for anxiety, depression, stress and burnout, and chronic pain and illness. It also suits perfectionism and any life that has quietly narrowed around avoidance: fewer plans, fewer risks, fewer things attempted. Where a thought is not distorted, grief, real loss, a diagnosis that is simply true, ACT offers a way to carry it without your life shrinking around it.
ACT across Queens
Here is what avoidance looks like in this borough: nothing dramatic. The mean travel time to work in Queens is 42.9 minutes each way, and only 12.9% of workers work from home (US Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates). Inside a work-commute-sleep week like that, “no time” becomes unfalsifiable, and avoidance gets to hide inside legitimate busyness. The invitation declined, the checkup deferred, the class not taken, each defensible on its own. The pattern is the expensive part, and it compounds slowly enough that nobody notices the price until it is large.
ACT’s answer is deliberately unheroic. Nobody asks you to restructure your week, because most people here cannot. You pick one small action per week that your values chose, size it to survive the schedule, often ten minutes, and do it whether or not the anxiety left first. Waiting to feel better before starting to live hands the anxiety the calendar. Willingness takes it back.
Sessions by video fit inside the same constraint, from home, before work, wherever you have privacy in New York State. More at our Jamaica, Queens location.
Insurance
ACT is billed under standard psychotherapy codes; there is no separate ACT rate. We are in-network with UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Medicare, Oscar Health, Meritain Health, Oxford Health Plans, Cigna, Optum, Highmark BCBS WNY, Univera Healthcare and MagnaCare. We check your plan before the first session and tell you what you will pay.
Questions people ask before booking
My week is genuinely full. What does committed action look like with no free time? Small and scheduled. One value-guided step a week, chosen in session and sized to your actual calendar. The method adapts to your week rather than demanding a new one.
Can I do a session from work in Manhattan? Yes, if you have real privacy there. You need to be physically in New York State during the session, and anywhere in the state qualifies.
Is acceptance just giving up? No. Acceptance means dropping the fight you cannot win, with feelings that do not obey orders, so your effort goes to the behavior you can control. Giving up is the opposite of what follows.
Is ACT just mindfulness? No. Mindfulness is one tool among several, used briefly and always tied to action. Values and committed action carry the method.
How long does ACT take? Often 8 to 16 sessions, depending on what you are working toward. Your monthly measures, reviewed with your therapist, tell you whether that estimate is holding.
