An open future sounds like freedom until you are standing in it, comparing five possible lives and living none of them while you decide.
MindView Therapy provides acceptance and commitment therapy for adults in Rochester, by telehealth throughout New York.
What ACT actually is
ACT was built for minds that will not stop weighing. Its central skills are practical. Defusion loosens the grip of sticky thoughts, so “I am falling behind” becomes a sentence your mind produced rather than a verdict you must obey. Acceptance makes room for the discomfort that comes with any real choice, and it is not resignation; it is refusing to spend your whole budget fighting a feeling. Mindfulness returns you to the present, where decisions actually get made. Values give you a direction to steer by, and committed action turns the direction into behavior, one deliberate step at a time.
What a session involves
A session usually starts with where you froze this week, and works out which skill the freeze calls for. The distinctive ACT move for a circling mind is shrinking the question: a semester-sized life decision becomes a two-week experiment with a defined end and something to learn either way. You are not asked to commit to a life; you are asked to run a test. Two weeks of the evening class, one coffee with the person in the field you are circling, a month of the schedule you think you want. The result is information, and information is what the circling never produces.
The course itself is structured the way every MindView therapy is: baseline ratings at intake, then your full history and a treatment plan naming the methods, weekly sessions, and standardized measures reviewed monthly. Courses often run 8 to 16 sessions depending on goals, which is a range and not a promise.
What ACT is used for
The research base is substantial for anxiety, depression, stress and burnout, and chronic pain and illness. ACT also fits perfectionism, decision paralysis, and seasons of life where nothing is wrong on paper and nothing is moving either. When the difficulty is real rather than distorted, a loss, a limit, a fact that argument cannot fix, ACT offers a way to hold it without your life narrowing around it.
ACT in Rochester
Rochester is heavy with people at open-future age: 31.2% of residents are between 18 and 34 (US Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates, table B01001). Those are exactly the years comparison thinking colonizes, because everyone around you is also mid-build, and everyone else’s build looks further along from the outside.
“Everyone my age has it figured out” is the model thought for defusion practice, because it behaves like a fact while being unverifiable. The skill, concretely: notice it as a thought, name it, something as plain as “there is the comparison story again,” thank your mind for the input, and return to the experiment you chose. Not because the thought is wrong, but because obeying it was never getting you anywhere. Repeated, this is what loosens the loop of comparing lives instead of running one. Sessions are by video from anywhere in New York. More at our Rochester page.

Questions people ask before booking
I keep circling the same life decision. Can therapy actually help with that? Yes, though not by picking for you. ACT breaks the circling: values become the compass, and a small committed experiment replaces the demand for a final verdict.
If I move within New York mid-course, does therapy continue? Yes. Anywhere in the state works, since your therapist is licensed statewide. Out of state it pauses, so raise a move early and plan around it.
Is acceptance the same as settling for less? No. Acceptance is where the energy comes from: effort stops going into the unwinnable fight with your feelings and starts going into what you value.
Does ACT work for depression too? Yes. It is used widely for depression alongside anxiety, stress, burnout and chronic pain, with values-guided activation doing much of the work.
How long does it take? Often 8 to 16 sessions, depending on your goals. The monthly measures show whether that estimate is holding for you.
