Remote and hybrid work handed a lot of people the keys to their own week, and the quiet discovery since is that avoidance is a very organized-looking tenant.
MindView Therapy provides acceptance and commitment therapy for adults (18+) across Indianapolis, by telehealth throughout Indiana.
What ACT actually is
ACT is less interested in what your thoughts say than in what they get you to do. Its skills are named plainly. Defusion loosens sticky thoughts until they read as commentary instead of commands. Acceptance makes room for feelings you cannot control, and it is the opposite of giving up; it is refusing to burn the day fighting them. Mindfulness is noticing what is actually happening, briefly and practically. Values name what you want your life to be about, and committed action is the weekly step that makes the naming real.
What a session involves
You bring the week, and the work is diagnostic in a practical sense: where did the day drift, and which process was jammed when it did? Your therapist teaches the skill that fits, and the session closes by choosing one committed action, specific, scheduled, linked to a value you named rather than a should you inherited. The step is sized to actually happen, because a completed small step beats an abandoned ambitious one every week of a course.
Around the sessions runs MindView’s standard structure: baseline ratings at intake, then your full history and a treatment plan that names the methods, weekly sessions, and standardized measures reviewed monthly. Courses often run 8 to 16 sessions depending on goals, a range and not a promise.
What ACT is used for
The research base is substantial for anxiety, depression, stress and burnout, and chronic pain and illness. ACT also fits perfectionism and the peculiar stuckness of a life that looks productive from every angle except the one that matters to you. Where the difficulty is a plain fact rather than a distorted thought, a limit, an illness, a loss, ACT is built for carrying it while life stays full-sized.
ACT across Indianapolis
With 14.0% of Indianapolis workers working from home (US Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates, table B08006), a meaningful slice of the city now structures its own week. Nobody watches the shape of a self-directed day, and without the hard edges a commute imposes, days blur and busyness quietly becomes the respectable face of avoidance. The inbox gets cleaned instead of the application sent. The errands get run instead of the call made. Every item defensible; the value untouched for months. Nothing about this pattern is laziness, which is exactly why productivity advice bounces off it. The busy day is doing a job, and the job is relief.
ACT has a name for this: productive avoidance, avoidance that would pass a performance review. The method looks at function rather than form, what the busyness is buying relief from, and answers with structure you choose rather than structure imposed on you. One values-linked action per week, scheduled like a meeting, plus defusion for the thoughts that argue against it when the time comes. Sessions run by telehealth, with our Indiana office in Carmel, IN. More at our Indianapolis page.
Insurance
ACT is billed under standard psychotherapy codes; there is no separate ACT rate. In Indiana we are in-network with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Cigna and Aetna. We check your plan before the first session and tell you what you will pay.
Questions people ask before booking
I work from home and my days have no shape. Is that a therapy issue? It is workable material. ACT builds chosen structure out of values rather than imposed discipline, which is why it tends to hold where willpower systems have not.
Do sessions have to be during business hours? Scheduling is set with your therapist, and a home-based day often makes a midday hour possible rather than impossible.
Is acceptance giving up? No. Acceptance ends the unwinnable fight with your feelings so the effort can go to chosen action. What follows acceptance is movement, not surrender.
Is this just a productivity system? No. Values come first and action second, and the aim is a life that matches what matters to you, not higher output. Some people’s committed action is rest.
How long does it take? Often 8 to 16 sessions, depending on goals. Monthly measures show whether the estimate is holding.
