Hiding compulsions from coworkers is one job; hiding them from children who live with you is another entirely, and it is usually the moment parents decide the rituals have to go.
MindView Therapy provides exposure and response prevention for adults (18+) in Fishers, by telehealth throughout Indiana.
What ERP actually is
OCD survives on a simple exchange: the ritual buys relief, and the relief convinces the brain the ritual was necessary. In a family house that exchange gets expensive fast, because the venue is shared. The kitchen everyone cooks in, the door everyone leaves through, the questions a spouse has learned to answer on script.
Exposure and response prevention ends the exchange deliberately. You approach a trigger in a planned, ranked step and practice not performing the ritual, and the anxiety, denied its usual exit, peaks and comes down by itself. That experience, repeated, is what re-trains the alarm. ERP is the most studied form of CBT for OCD and a first-line treatment; that describes the research base, not a promised timeline for you.
What a session involves
The plan always precedes the practice, and consent runs through every rung. You and your therapist build an exposure hierarchy from your actual triggers, ranked easiest to hardest, and define response-prevention targets, the specific rituals you will practice leaving undone, including the invisible ones like mental review and reassurance-seeking. Steps get chosen together, run between sessions in the real environment, and reviewed the following week, with wins and stalls treated as equally useful information.
Progress is measured, not assumed: standardized measures once a month, and a plan that has stalled after a fair trial gets rebuilt. Between sessions, the agreed steps repeat in the real rooms of the real house, which is where the change actually accrues.
What ERP treats
ERP is the dedicated protocol for OCD in every presentation: contamination, checking, symmetry, intrusive thoughts, mental rituals, reassurance loops. The same graded structure treats phobias, panic, agoraphobia, social anxiety and avoidance-driven anxiety. No diagnosis is required to ask. And if the compulsions have been managed quietly for years, that management counts as evidence of effort, not a reason treatment is unnecessary.
ERP in Fishers
The family house is its own hierarchy. Contamination rituals in a shared kitchen, checking that delays the school run, wipe-downs a child has started to notice: these are specific, rankable, and treatable exactly where they happen. With 25.5% of Fishers workers working from home (US Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates, table B08006), a quarter of working adults here can take a midday session while the house is empty, which is both the privacy slot a family evening never provides and a live exposure environment with the therapist on screen.
The modeling worry deserves a straight answer, because for many parents it is the real reason they book. If a child has started copying the wipe-down or offering the reassurance script back, the honest frame is this: treating your own loop is the intervention you control, and it is a real one. Questions about a child’s own behavior belong with a child’s own clinician; we see adults (18+). More at our Fishers page, with our Indiana office in Carmel, IN.
Insurance
ERP is billed under standard psychotherapy codes; there is no separate ERP rate. In Indiana we are in-network with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Cigna and Aetna. We check your plan before the first session and tell you what you will pay.
Questions people ask before booking
Can I schedule sessions while my kids are at school? Yes. That midday window is exactly what a work-from-home day allows, and it is the most requested slot here.
My child has started copying my checking. Can you treat both of us? We see adults (18+). Treating your own loop is the part you control, and your child’s questions belong with a child clinician. Your therapist can talk through that honestly at intake.
Will exposures involve my family? Only with your agreement. Household accommodation, the answered reassurance questions, the adjusted routines, can be unwound gently as part of your plan.
Is ERP just for contamination fears? No. Checking, intrusive thoughts, symmetry, reassurance loops, phobias and panic all fit the same ranked structure.
How long does it take? A focused course of weekly sessions, with the pace set by your progress on the monthly measures rather than a fixed promise.
