If you searched for a UnitedHealthcare therapist in Queens, here is the short version. We take UnitedHealthcare, we are accepting new clients, and you can book online in about two minutes. If you have been looking for therapists that take United Healthcare insurance, you are in the right place. Sessions are available at our Jamaica office and by telehealth anywhere in New York.

Does MindView take UnitedHealthcare in Queens?

Yes. MindView Therapy is in-network with UnitedHealthcare at our Jamaica office, and by telehealth throughout New York State.

In-network means UnitedHealthcare has a negotiated rate with us. You are responsible for your copay or coinsurance, not the full cost of the session, and you are not billed the difference.

Why does my mental health benefit say Optum?

Because it does. UnitedHealthcare runs its behavioral health network through Optum, which is UnitedHealth Group’s behavioral health arm. Your medical card says UnitedHealthcare, but therapy claims are processed by Optum, and the mental health customer service number on the back of your card usually routes there.

This confuses a lot of members and is worth saying plainly: being in-network with UnitedHealthcare and being in-network with Optum are the same thing for us. You do not need to figure out which one to give us. Give us the card.

One thing to watch for. Some employers also buy a separate EAP through Optum, which gives you a set number of prepaid counseling sessions before your regular benefits kick in. That is a different benefit with different rules. When we verify coverage, we tell you which one you are using.

What will I actually pay?

That depends on your specific UnitedHealthcare plan, and we will not guess.

Most people pay a copay per session. Some plans use coinsurance, a percentage of the negotiated rate. Some require you to meet a deductible first, in which case you pay the negotiated rate until the deductible is met and your copay takes over.

We verify your benefits before your first session and tell you what you will owe. No surprise bill after the fact.

Do I need a referral?

Usually not. Most UnitedHealthcare commercial plans let you see an in-network behavioral health provider without a referral from a primary care doctor.

Some HMO plan designs are the exception and do require one. We check the plan type when we verify your benefits and tell you before it turns into a denied claim.

Where is the Queens office, and what does therapy here involve?

Our Queens office is at 89-14 Parsons Boulevard, Suite 24, 5th Floor, Jamaica, NY 11432, serving Jamaica, Hillcrest, Briarwood, Kew Gardens, Fresh Meadows, Jamaica Estates, and the neighborhoods around them. Telehealth is available anywhere in New York. You can also call (646) 493-4007.

Every client follows the same structure. The first session is an intake. The second is a psychosocial assessment. The third is where you and your therapist build your treatment plan together.

From there, sessions are weekly. Once a month you complete standardized measures, such as the PHQ-9 and GAD-7, and your therapist reviews the trend with you. If something is not working, the plan changes. Therapy here is measured, not guessed.

What UnitedHealthcare covers here

  • UnitedHealthcare behavioral health benefits are administered by Optum, its behavioral health arm. Your therapy claims run through Optum even though your card says UnitedHealthcare.
  • Because we are in-network, you owe your plan's copay, coinsurance, or remaining deductible rather than the full session rate.
  • Most UnitedHealthcare commercial plans do not require a referral to see an in-network behavioral health provider. Some HMO designs do.
  • Telehealth is covered on most UnitedHealthcare plans at the same benefit level as an in-office visit.
  • Some UnitedHealthcare members also have a separate employer EAP through Optum with a set number of prepaid sessions. That is a different benefit from outpatient therapy, and we tell you which one applies.

How to book with UnitedHealthcare

  1. 1

Have your UnitedHealthcare member ID card handy. The member ID and group number are on the front.

  2. 2

Book a session online through our secure client portal. It takes about two minutes and is mostly checkboxes.

  3. 3

We verify your behavioral health benefits with Optum and confirm what you will owe before your first appointment.

  4. 4

Come to your first session, which is an intake. If anything about your coverage changes, we tell you before it costs you anything.

What does therapy here actually look like?

The first three sessions follow a clear structure, so you always know what is coming next.

  1. Session 1: Intake

Your first session is an intake. Your therapist asks what brought you in and about your history, and you rate the intensity of what you are feeling from 0 to 10. That becomes your baseline. You set a recurring weekly time before you leave.

  2. Session 2: Psychosocial

Your therapist walks through your life across stages, looking for the patterns and strengths behind what brought you in. You can decline any question and keep any answer short.

  3. Session 3: Treatment plan

You and your therapist build the plan together. Goals are tied to what you came in for, each with concrete objectives, plus one personal goal that matters to you.

  4. Ongoing

Weekly sessions work the plan. Once a month you and your therapist review standardized measures together to see whether it is working, and the plan is adjusted from what they show.

Therapy here is measured, not guessed

Once a month you have a Psycho-Measurement-Based Care Review (PMBCR). You complete standardized measures, such as the PHQ-9 and GAD-7, and your therapist reviews the trend with you. If something is not working, the plan changes. Regular therapy is the work. The review is the navigation system that keeps it pointed at the right target.

Sessions are weekly for the first two months to build a foundation, then frequency is reassessed with you. You set the pace, and you share only what you are comfortable sharing.
