If you searched for a UnitedHealthcare therapist in Buffalo, this is the short version. We take UnitedHealthcare, we are accepting new clients, and you can book online in about two minutes. Sessions are available at our Washington Street office and by telehealth anywhere in New York.

Does MindView take UnitedHealthcare in Buffalo?

Yes. MindView Therapy is in-network with UnitedHealthcare at our downtown Buffalo office, and by telehealth throughout New York State.

In-network means UHC has a negotiated rate with us. You pay your copay or coinsurance, not the full session fee, and you are not billed the difference.

Why does UnitedHealthcare keep sending me to Optum?

Because Optum Behavioral Health is UnitedHealth Group’s behavioral health arm. UnitedHealthcare handles your medical benefits. Optum manages the mental health network, the provider directory, and the claims for your therapy sessions.

This confuses a lot of members. You call the number on the front of the card about therapy and get transferred. Nothing is wrong. It is the same company and the same coverage, and we are in that network. If you are checking on your own, use the mental health or behavioral health number on the back of the card.

The same structure explains Oxford. Oxford Health Plans is also a UnitedHealthcare company, and we accept those cards too.

Do I need a referral?

On most commercial UnitedHealthcare plans, no. You can self-refer to an in-network behavioral health provider for outpatient therapy. There is no requirement to see a primary care doctor first.

Some gated plan designs, and some Medicare Advantage products, work differently. Routine weekly outpatient therapy rarely requires prior authorization. We verify your specific plan before your first session rather than assuming.

What will I actually pay?

That depends on your plan, and we will not guess.

Most members pay a copay per session. Others pay coinsurance, a percentage of the negotiated rate. Some plans require you to meet a deductible first, so you pay the negotiated rate until it is met and your copay applies after that.

UnitedHealthcare’s employer plans vary enormously, and many large Western New York employers self-fund and simply use the UHC network. We verify your benefits and tell you what you will owe before you sit down.

Where is the Buffalo office and what does therapy involve?

Our Buffalo office is at 369 Washington Street, 1st Floor, Suite 110, Buffalo, NY 14203. It is downtown and serves Buffalo and Western New York, including Elmwood Village, North Buffalo, Allentown, Amherst, Cheektowaga, and Tonawanda. Telehealth is available anywhere in New York.

The therapy structure is the same for every client. The first session is an intake: what brought you in, your history, what you want to change. The second is a psychosocial assessment, a fuller look at your life across relationships, work, health, and history. In the third session you and your therapist build your treatment plan together, with goals tied to what you came in for plus one personal goal that matters to you.

From there, sessions are weekly. Once a month you complete standardized measures, such as the PHQ-9 and GAD-7, and your therapist reviews the trend with you. If the data shows the plan is not working, the plan changes. Therapy here is measured, not guessed.

What UnitedHealthcare covers here

  • UnitedHealthcare's behavioral health benefits are administered by Optum Behavioral Health, a UnitedHealth Group company. The UHC card and the Optum network are the same coverage.
  • Most UnitedHealthcare commercial plans allow you to self-refer to an in-network therapist without a primary care referral.
  • Because we are in-network, you owe your plan's copay, coinsurance, or remaining deductible rather than the full session rate.
  • Oxford Health Plans is also a UnitedHealthcare company. If your card says Oxford, the benefits work similarly but the plan rules can differ.
  • Telehealth is covered on most UnitedHealthcare plans at the same benefit level as an in-office visit. We confirm this for your plan.

How to book with UnitedHealthcare

  1. 1

Have your UnitedHealthcare member ID card handy. The back often lists a separate mental health or Optum phone number.

  2. 2

Book a session online through our secure client portal. It takes about two minutes and is mostly checkboxes.

  3. 3

We verify your behavioral health benefits through Optum and confirm what you will owe before your first appointment.

  4. 4

Come to your first session, which is an intake. If your coverage details change, we tell you before it costs you anything.

What does therapy here actually look like?

The first three sessions follow a clear structure, so you always know what is coming next.

  1. Session 1: Intake

Your first session is an intake. Your therapist asks what brought you in and about your history, and you rate the intensity of what you are feeling from 0 to 10. That becomes your baseline. You set a recurring weekly time before you leave.

  2. Session 2: Psychosocial

Your therapist walks through your life across stages, looking for the patterns and strengths behind what brought you in. You can decline any question and keep any answer short.

  3. Session 3: Treatment plan

You and your therapist build the plan together. Goals are tied to what you came in for, each with concrete objectives, plus one personal goal that matters to you.

  4. Ongoing

Weekly sessions work the plan. Once a month you and your therapist review standardized measures together to see whether it is working, and the plan is adjusted from what they show.

Therapy here is measured, not guessed

Once a month you have a Psycho-Measurement-Based Care Review (PMBCR). You complete standardized measures, such as the PHQ-9 and GAD-7, and your therapist reviews the trend with you. If something is not working, the plan changes. Regular therapy is the work. The review is the navigation system that keeps it pointed at the right target.

Sessions are weekly for the first two months to build a foundation, then frequency is reassessed with you. You set the pace, and you share only what you are comfortable sharing.

Yes. We are in-network with UnitedHealthcare at our Buffalo office at 369 Washington Street, and for telehealth across New York State.

Why does my UnitedHealthcare plan point me to Optum for therapy?

Optum Behavioral Health is UnitedHealth Group's behavioral health arm. It manages the therapist network and processes mental health claims for UHC members. You are still a UnitedHealthcare member and we are still in-network.

Do I need a referral to see a therapist with UnitedHealthcare?

On most commercial UHC plans, no. You can self-refer to an in-network behavioral health provider. Certain gated plans differ, and we check yours when we verify benefits.

What will therapy cost me with UnitedHealthcare?

You pay your plan's copay or coinsurance rather than the full session fee, and any unmet deductible may apply first. Costs vary by plan, so we verify your benefits and tell you the number before your first session.

Does UnitedHealthcare cover virtual therapy in New York?

Most UHC plans cover telehealth behavioral health at the same benefit level as an in-office visit. We confirm this for your specific plan.

My card says Oxford, not UnitedHealthcare. Are you in-network?
