Why MindView

Most Anxiety therapy in Ithaca has no structure. Ours has four stages and a scoreboard.

Most practices in Ithaca deliver whatever approach the therapist you happened to get was trained in. We run one format for every client, and we measure it.

  1. 01

    Intake

What is actually going on, rated 0 to 10 as your baseline.

  2. 02

    Your history

Why it is happening. History, relationships, work, health.

  3. 03

    Treatment plan

Written and collaborative, built against those causes.

  4. 04

    Monthly review

Standardized measures, reviewed with you. You see the trend.

A license is where our training starts, not where it ends.

Every clinician is state-licensed before they see a single client. Then they train with us across every modality, and how to match one to the problem in front of them.

Ithaca is a small city with a very large seasonal population, and for an adult looking for ongoing anxiety treatment here the practical result is usually a wait.

MindView Therapy provides anxiety therapy for adults across Ithaca and Tompkins County, online by secure video, so availability does not depend on how many therapists happen to be taking new clients within driving distance of the Commons.

What anxiety treatment actually is

Anxiety survives on avoidance. Every time you sidestep the thing you are afraid of, the relief is immediate and it teaches the alarm that it was right, so the fear gets a little stronger and the list of avoided things gets a little longer.

Treatment reverses that. You and your therapist identify what you have stopped doing, then rebuild toward it deliberately in steps you set the pace on, while testing the predictions driving the alarm rather than arguing with them. The point is not to feel calm before you act. It is to find out what actually happens.

Progress is reviewed with standardized measures, so improvement is checked rather than assumed.

What we offer, and what we do not

Weekly individual therapy for adults 18 and over, by video, across New York.

We do not prescribe medication and we do not perform psychological or ADHD testing. If medication becomes part of your plan, your therapist works alongside your prescriber.

We are not a crisis service and we are not an intensive program. If you need daily contact or a higher level of care, we will say so at intake rather than start something the wrong size for the problem.

We see adults only, which in this city is worth stating clearly: if you are a currently enrolled student with access to campus counseling, that service is free to you and often faster, and it is a reasonable first stop.

What a session involves

You bring the week and what you avoided in it. You work out what the fear predicted, what actually happened, and what the next step toward the avoided thing looks like. Then you agree what you are going to try before the next session, because the change happens between appointments rather than during them.

We treat generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic, health anxiety, phobias, academic stress, and perfectionism, which in a town like this one is frequently the engine underneath the anxiety rather than a separate issue. Read more on how we treat anxiety and on cognitive behavioral therapy.

Doing this work in Ithaca

Ithaca is demographically unlike anywhere else we serve, and it changes who walks through the door.

The median age here is 23.3 and 59.6% of residents are aged 18 to 34, by far the highest share of any city we serve and more than double the figure in Buffalo (US Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates, tables B01002 and B01001). This is a city built around two student bodies, and its counseling infrastructure is built around them too.

That leaves a specific gap, and it is the one we exist to fill here: everyone else. Staff and faculty, hospital and school employees, people working in the tourism and food economy, retirees around Cayuga Lake, and graduate students and postdocs whose situation is much closer to employment than to undergraduate life. If your funding, your visa timeline and your advisor relationship are tangled into a single source of constant low-grade dread, that is a real and specific form of anxiety and it is treatable.

Isolation runs underneath a lot of it. 39.2% of Ithaca adults report feeling lonely, the highest rate of any city we serve, and 44.5% of households here are a person living alone (CDC PLACES, 2025 release, based on 2023 BRFSS data; US Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 five-year estimates, table B11001). In a town where the population turns over every year and most social life is organized around academic calendars you may not be on, that is not a personal failing. It is the structure of the place.

Access here is unusual too. Only 5.7% of Ithaca adults report having no personal health care provider, one of the lowest rates we see (CDC PLACES, 2025 release, based on 2023 BRFSS data). People here are generally connected to care. The shortage is in ongoing outpatient therapy slots rather than in health coverage.

Winter is a real variable. Long, grey, and genuinely hard on mood and anxiety alike from January through March. If your symptoms have a reliable seasonal shape, say so at intake, because it changes what gets planned and when. It is worth reading about seasonal affective disorder.

Insurance

We are in-network with UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Medicare, Oscar Health, Meritain Health, Oxford Health Plans, Cigna, Optum, Highmark BCBS WNY, Univera Healthcare and MagnaCare. We check your plan and tell you your cost before the first session.

Questions people ask before booking

I am a grad student. Can I use my parents’ plan? Often yes, if you are on it and we accept it. Send the details when you book and we will check before the first session.

I leave Ithaca for the summer. Sessions can continue anywhere in New York. Outside the state they have to pause, because your therapist is licensed here. Raise it early and the work gets planned around it.

Do I need a diagnosis or a referral? No.

How long does this take? Anxiety treatment is usually a course rather than an open-ended arrangement, and your therapist will give you a straight answer about the likely shape once they know what you are working on.

If you are in crisis

We are not a crisis service. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988, any hour, free and confidential. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
