Insurance & Cost

Does insurance cover marriage counseling in Indiana?

Often, yes. Most Indiana plans cover marriage counseling when the sessions are part of one partner's mental health care, though some plans exclude relationship counseling on its own. Coverage depends on your specific plan, not just the insurer's name. In Indiana, MindView Therapy is in-network with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Cigna, and Aetna, and we verify your couples coverage before your first session, so you know before you book.

The rule that decides most coverage questions

Health insurance exists to pay for treating health conditions. That single fact explains almost everything about couples coverage.

When couples sessions are part of treating one partner’s diagnosed mental health condition, say, depression that the marriage strain deepens, or anxiety that keeps turning into conflict at home, plans generally cover them the way they cover any outpatient therapy. When sessions are framed as pure relationship improvement with no identified condition, some plans decline them. The same couple, the same therapist, the same room, and a different answer depending on how the clinical picture is documented and what the plan’s benefit language says.

This is not a loophole and it is not something to game.

The three payers we take in Indiana

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Anthem is the Blue Cross Blue Shield plan in Indiana, so most Indiana Blue Cross members are Anthem members. Couples sessions run through the plan’s behavioral health benefits, and most Anthem plans cover them when tied to one partner’s care.

Cigna - we are in-network. Coverage for couples sessions depends on your specific plan’s behavioral health language, which is exactly what the verification checks.

Aetna - we are in-network. Verification before the first session is the only reliable answer.

These three are the only plans MindView accepts in Indiana. If yours is not among them, the out-of-pocket and sliding scale options below still apply.

What you pay when coverage applies, and when it does not

With coverage, your cost is your plan’s copay, coinsurance, or deductible amount per session, not the posted fee. Without coverage, a couples session at MindView is $200 out of pocket with a $225 first-session intake, sliding scale rates are available based on financial need, and HSA or FSA funds can be used. The full cost picture for Indiana walks through the numbers.

Either way, you get your real per-session cost before your first appointment. Nobody should discover their coverage answer on a bill.

How marriage counseling works here

Marriage counseling at MindView follows the same structure as all of our care: an intake, a careful map of each partner’s history covering each partner’s history, then a treatment plan the two of you build with your therapist, followed by weekly sessions that work the plan. Once a month, standardized measures get reviewed against your baseline so all three of you can see whether the work is helping.

We see adult couples by telehealth anywhere in Indiana, with an office in Carmel, IN for the Indianapolis area. Our Indiana-licensed therapist provides all of our care in the state. Common questions

How does insurance decide whether to cover couples sessions?

Health insurance pays for treating a health condition, so couples sessions are covered when they are part of treating one partner's diagnosed condition, such as depression or anxiety that the relationship strain feeds or is fed by. Sessions framed purely as relationship enrichment, with no identified condition, are what some plans exclude. The benefits check tells you which side your plan lands on.

Does Anthem cover marriage counseling in Indiana?

Many Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans cover couples and family psychotherapy sessions under their behavioral health benefits when the care is tied to one partner's mental health treatment. Anthem is the Blue Cross Blue Shield plan in Indiana, and MindView is in-network with Anthem statewide. We confirm what your specific Anthem plan covers before your first appointment.

Is marriage counseling covered differently than couples therapy?

No. Insurers do not distinguish marriage counseling from couples therapy; both are billed as couples sessions, and whether you are married changes nothing. If your plan covers couples sessions, it covers them for married and unmarried partners alike. What matters is your plan's behavioral health benefits, not your relationship status.

What if my plan does not cover couples sessions?

You can still come. Out-of-pocket couples sessions at MindView are $200, with a first-session intake at $225, and sliding scale rates are available based on financial need. HSA and FSA funds apply. If cost is the deciding factor, say so when you book; it is a solvable problem and we would rather solve it than have it delay the work.
