How do you overcome social anxiety?
Social anxiety usually eases through cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps you test the fearful predictions you make about being judged and gradually face the social situations you have been avoiding, in planned steps. Avoidance is what keeps social anxiety alive, so approaching it at a pace you set is central. Practical skills help in the moment, but facing the fear is what shrinks it. It is one of the more treatable forms of anxiety.

Social anxiety can shrink your world, turning ordinary things, speaking up, making a call, walking into a room, into sources of dread. The encouraging part is that it is one of the more treatable anxiety problems, and the path through it is well understood.
The three-part loop that keeps it running
Social anxiety is not just fear in the moment. It runs on a loop with three parts, and each part deserves attention because they are treated differently.
Before comes anticipatory dread. You accept an invitation on Monday and spend until Saturday rehearsing conversations, planning exits, and calculating whether cancelling is still socially acceptable. The event has already cost you a week before it happens.
During comes self-focused attention. This is the mechanism most people miss. Under threat, attention turns inward and you begin monitoring yourself from the outside, tracking your voice, your face, whether your hands are visible, how long the pause has run. That inward monitoring uses the same attention you need to actually follow the conversation, which is why you lose the thread and then take losing the thread as proof you are bad at this.
After comes the post-mortem. On the drive home you replay every exchange, isolate the worst three seconds, and file them permanently. Nobody replays the eleven minutes that went fine. The archive fills with edited lowlights, and next time your anxiety cites the archive as evidence.
Safety behaviors are the hidden problem
Most people know avoidance is a problem. Fewer realize that the things they do to get through an event work the same way.
Rehearsing sentences before saying them. Arriving early so nobody watches you enter. Holding a drink so your hands have a job. Asking questions constantly so you never have to talk. Sitting near the door. Keeping your phone out. Drinking two before you leave the house. Standing at an angle so your face is partly turned away.
Each one lowers anxiety a little in the moment, and each one blocks the learning. If the evening goes fine, you attribute it to the safety behavior rather than to the fact that the feared outcome was never likely. So the fear survives intact. Dropping safety behaviors, deliberately and one at a time, is often the single change that moves things most.
What treatment actually asks of you
The evidence-based path is cognitive behavioral therapy, and it is more specific than “face your fears.”
You and your therapist write down what you actually predict will happen. Not vague dread, but a testable sentence with a number attached. “If I ask a question in the meeting, at least three people will visibly react and I will rate my anxiety at 9 out of 10.” Then you go find out. Afterward you compare the prediction against what happened. This is called a behavioral experiment, and its power is that it produces data your anxiety cannot easily dismiss, because you wrote the prediction down first.
The steps start small and stay in your control. Ordering coffee without pre-planning the sentence. Asking a stranger for directions. Making one comment in a meeting. Deliberately leaving a short silence in a conversation instead of filling it. Later steps get harder, and you choose when. Nobody gets pushed into a presentation in week two.
A useful and uncomfortable exercise involves doing something mildly awkward on purpose, such as asking for a drink with no ice and then changing your mind. The point is not exposure to embarrassment for its own sake. It is discovering how briefly other people care.
What tends to change first
Progress rarely arrives as confidence. Confidence is a late arrival. What usually shifts first is recovery speed. The post-mortem still starts, but it lasts an hour instead of two days. Then anticipation shortens. Then, eventually, situations you were avoiding are back on the table, sometimes still uncomfortable but no longer off-limits.
At MindView the first session sets a baseline by having you rate the intensity of what you came in with on a 0 to 10 scale, and monthly reviews use standardized measures to check whether things are actually moving. Your therapist reviews that trend with you and adjusts the plan on what the data shows rather than on how the last week happened to feel. Social anxiety often travels alongside perfectionism or low self-esteem, and the treatment plan accounts for that. Here is how we treat social anxiety.
Starting smaller than you think
People with social anxiety often delay booking because booking is itself a social act. If calling is the harder option, the online scheduler at choose your therapist requires no conversation. If you would rather speak to someone, the number is (646) 493-4007. Sessions run in Jamaica, Queens and in Buffalo, and by telehealth across New York, and a first session by video is a reasonable place to start if a waiting room is a step too far right now.

Common questions
What causes social anxiety?
Social anxiety usually comes from a mix of temperament, experience, and learned beliefs, often a deep fear of being judged, embarrassed, or found wanting. Past experiences of criticism, bullying, or humiliation can prime it. It is maintained by avoidance and by safety behaviors (like rehearsing or hiding), which prevent you from learning that social situations are survivable.
How do you get rid of social anxiety without medication?
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a first-line, non-medication treatment for social anxiety. It helps you challenge the belief that you are being judged, drop the safety behaviors that keep the fear going, and gradually face feared situations so your confidence rebuilds. Many people improve significantly with therapy alone; others combine it with medication managed by a prescriber.
Is social anxiety the same as being shy?
No. Shyness is a personality trait; social anxiety is a more intense, persistent fear of social situations that interferes with your life, work, relationships, or daily activities. Many shy people are perfectly comfortable; social anxiety involves real distress and avoidance. If social fear is holding you back, it is worth addressing regardless of the label.
How long does it take to overcome social anxiety?
There is no fixed timeline, and it depends on the severity and how consistently you face feared situations. Social anxiety is one of the more responsive anxiety problems, and many people see meaningful change over a focused course of therapy. Your therapist tracks progress with you rather than promising a specific result.

How do you stop an anxiety attack?
To calm an anxiety attack in the moment, slow your breathing with a longer exhale, remind yourself that the feeling is anxiety and not danger, and ground yourself through your senses rather than fighting the sensations. The wave rises and falls; letting it pass without struggling shortens it. These tools help in the moment, but anxiety attacks respond best to therapy like CBT, which reduces how often they happen by treating the cycle at its source.
