Quick answer

Does Medicare cover a therapist?

Yes. Medicare Part B covers outpatient mental health care, including individual and family psychotherapy. Since January 2024, Medicare also pays licensed mental health counselors (LMHCs) directly, which opened thousands of therapists to Medicare clients. After you meet the Part B deductible, Medicare typically pays 80 percent of the approved amount and you pay 20 percent, unless supplemental coverage picks that up. MindView Therapy accepts Medicare at our Queens and Buffalo offices.

Does Medicare cover therapy for anxiety and depression?

Yes. Part B covers psychotherapy for diagnosed mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression, along with an annual depression screening at no cost when done in a primary care setting. There is no fixed session limit for outpatient therapy; care continues as long as it is medically appropriate.

How much does therapy cost with Medicare?

After the annual Part B deductible, you pay 20 percent of the Medicare-approved amount for each session and Medicare pays the rest. Medigap supplemental plans often cover that 20 percent, bringing your cost near zero. Medicare Advantage plans set their own copays, so check your plan. MindView verifies your specific coverage before your first session.

Does Medicare cover online therapy?

Yes. Medicare covers mental health care delivered by telehealth, including video sessions from your home. This is one of the telehealth benefits Medicare has kept in place for behavioral health. Cost-sharing works the same as an office visit: the deductible, then 20 percent coinsurance, unless supplemental coverage applies.

Do Medicare Advantage plans cover therapy too?

Yes. Medicare Advantage plans must cover everything Original Medicare covers, including outpatient psychotherapy, though they use their own networks and copays. If you have an Advantage plan, confirm the therapist is in that plan's network before booking. When you book with MindView, we check your specific Advantage plan as part of verifying your benefits.

Why many therapists say no to Medicare, and what changed

For decades Medicare did not recognize licensed mental health counselors, so most LMHC practices could not see Medicare clients at all. That changed on January 1, 2024, when Medicare began paying LMHCs and marriage and family therapists directly under Part B. Coverage caught up to where the therapist workforce actually is.

What that means at MindView: our clinicians are LMHCs, and we accept Medicare at both New York offices, 89-14 Parsons Boulevard in Jamaica, Queens and 369 Washington Street in Buffalo, with telehealth available for both. We verify your Medicare coverage, including any Medigap or Advantage plan, before your first session and tell you what a visit will cost you.
